Effects of heat waves on heat stroke in Shanghai, 2013—2023

open access: yes环境与职业医学
BackgroundThe substantial health damage attributed to heat waves, along with their increasing intensity and frequency in the context of global warming, highlights the importance of exploring the health effects of heat waves.

Intense heat waves: dynamical-physical factors and characteristics of these heat waves

open access: yesSakarya Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü Dergisi, 2017
Dynamical and physical factors that trigger and maintain heat waves (HW) were examined. Since high pressure systems play a role in HW processes, an atmospheric blocking method was introduced.

Gravitational wave heating

open access: yesPhysical Review D
It was shown in previous work that when a gravitational wave (GW) passes through a viscous shell of matter the magnitude of the GW will be damped and there are astrohysical circumstances in which the damping is almost complete. The energy transfer from the GWs to the fluid will increase its temperature.

Parental exposure to heat waves improves offspring reproductive investment in Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae), but not in its predator, Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acari: Phytoseiidae)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2023
The more frequent and intense occurrence of heat waves is a challenge for arthropods because their unpredictable incidence requires fast adaptations by the exposed individuals.

Characterization and Spatial Coverage of Heat Waves in Subtropical Brazil

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
Given the increase in the frequency, intensity, and persistence of heat waves since the 1970s, and in view of the impacts that extreme temperatures may cause for society and the economy, this study aims to characterize heat waves in the subtropical ...

On the atmospheric background for the occurrence of three heat wave types in East China

open access: yesWeather and Climate Extremes, 2023
Compared with daytime (occurring only in daytime) and nighttime (occurring only in nighttime) heat waves (HWs), daytime-nighttime compound HWs (occurring simultaneously in daytime and nighttime) are highlighted to exert much severer impacts especially on

Dimensionless scaling of heat-release-induced planar shock waves in near-critical CO2

open access: yes, 2017
We performed highly resolved one-dimensional fully compressible Navier-Stokes simulations of heat-release-induced compression waves in near-critical CO2. The computational setup, inspired by the experimental setup of Miura et al., Phys. Rev.

Frequency Dependent Specific Heat from Thermal Effusion in Spherical Geometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We present a novel method of measuring the frequency dependent specific heat at the glass transition applied to 5-polyphenyl-4-ether. The method employs thermal waves effusing radially out from the surface of a spherical thermistor that acts as both a ...

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Effects of Autumn and Spring Heat Waves on Seed Germination of High Mountain Plants. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Alpine plants are considered to be particularly vulnerable to climate change and related extreme episodes, such as heat waves. Despite growing interest in the impact of heat waves on alpine plants, knowledge about their effects on regeneration is still ...
