On the atmospheric background for the occurrence of three heat wave types in East China
Compared with daytime (occurring only in daytime) and nighttime (occurring only in nighttime) heat waves (HWs), daytime-nighttime compound HWs (occurring simultaneously in daytime and nighttime) are highlighted to exert much severer impacts especially on

Heating and cooling of the thermosphere by internal gravity waves [PDF]
For the first time, estimates of heating and cooling in the upper thermosphere due to dissipating and breaking gravity waves ( GWs) of tropospheric origin have been obtained with a comprehensive general circulation model ( GCM).

The July-August 2005 issue of Eurosurveillance focused on the impact on mortality of the 2003 heat wave in Europe, with articles that were based on various methods and looked at different time periods. The subject of this letter is to assess, using a unique methodology, the excess mortality related to the 2003 heat wave across the continent.

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Mortality on extreme heat days using official thresholds in Spain: a multi-city time series analysis. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The 2003 heat wave had a high impact on mortality in Europe, which made necessary to develop heat health watch warning systems. In Spain this was carried-out by the Ministry of Health in 2004, being based on exceeding of city-specific ...

Effects of Autumn and Spring Heat Waves on Seed Germination of High Mountain Plants. [PDF]
Alpine plants are considered to be particularly vulnerable to climate change and related extreme episodes, such as heat waves. Despite growing interest in the impact of heat waves on alpine plants, knowledge about their effects on regeneration is still ...

Simple preventive measures may help reduce mortality Increasing evidence shows that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are rising and are causing global warming.1 Record air temperatures were recorded in Britain during the last month. Accurate estimates of the consequences of these must wait until daily mortality data are available, but press reports ...

Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Application of Phase Change Materials to Reduce Heat Related Risks During Extreme Heat Waves in Australian Dwellings [PDF]
This study investigates the effect of phase change materials (PCMs) in reducing potential heat stress risks in non-air-conditioned buildings during heat wave periods, such as that occurred in Melbourne, 2009.

This paper presents the projected changes in daytime-nighttime compound heat waves (HWs) (i.e. concurrent occurrence of HWs both in daytime and nighttime) and associated population exposure in China under the shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP)2-4.5 and ...
