Extreme rainfall in southern China in April 2024 and its potential link to weather events across south Asia

This study documents the unseasonal and prolonged heavy rain events which occurred in southern China during April 2024. In this series of extreme rainfall events, Guangdong province recorded extreme rainfall exceeding 6‐sigma of climatology, with eleven cities reporting record‐breaking rainfall.

Limited capacity for rapid acclimation to marine heatwaves in coastal invertebrates

Across 10 coastal invertebrate species, we provide a rare multi‐species test of rapid acclimation to realistic marine heatwaves. Rapid loss, and slow recovery, of coral reef structural complexity resulting from a prolonged marine heatwave

Using Structure‐from‐Motion photogrammetry in a longitudinal study, we show that although coral reef habitat complexity had declined significantly by the end of the most prolonged tropical marine heatwave on record, no further losses were detected and 3 years later the reef had begun to recover this critical ecosystem function.
