Hydrodynamic performance of solid and porous heave plates
Heave plates have been widely utilized in floating offshore structures as they can provide additional damping and added mass to improve the hydrodynamic response of the system. This study investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics (added mass and damping) of oscillatory solid or porous disks using model scale experiments.

CFD approach to heave damping of spar with heave plates with experimental validation
Applied Ocean Research, 2021Abstract Spar, tension leg platform, and semi-submersibles use heave plates to reduce heave response by increasing heave damping and added mass. Conventional practice is to use a linear damping ratio, which is typically obtained from free heave decay tests or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.

A Review of the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Heave Plates
Advanced Materials Research, 2013Heave plates can increase the added mass and viscous damping of marine structures. It's a more economical way to improve the stability of the marine structures' heave movement by adding heave plates compared to other methods. Many scholars have studied on the influencing factors of theirs properties.

Hydrodynamic performance of a continuous floating bridge with heave plates
Applied Ocean Research, 2021Abstract This paper establishes a two-dimensional mathematical model of a continuous floating bridge with heave plates under linear monochromatic waves. Based on linear potential flow theory, the fluid domain is divided into two regions. The analytical equations for the rigid floating bridge considering the heave plate effect are derived from the ...

Abstract Heave plates are widely used in floating offshore structures to reduce the heave motion by increasing heave damping and heave added mass, and these parameters are sensitive to the amplitude and frequency of heave motion. It is important to obtain the hydrodynamic parameters, namely, damping and added mass of the floater not only at its ...

Hydrodynamic damping of solid and perforated heave plates oscillating at low KC number based on experimental data: A review [PDF]
Heave plates exert a unique influence on the motions of marine structures floating in seas or oceans. Due to their low thickness and sharp edges, the hydrodynamic performance of these plates is influenced by such physical and oscillatory parameters as ...

Influence of heave plate topology on reaction force
Ocean Engineering, 2021Abstract In this study, we explore the role of heave plate topology on fluid reaction forces using three, representative shapes: a hexagonal flat plate, a hexagonal conic with an open top, and the same with a closed top that encloses a fluid mass. We force each test article sinusoidally in a quiescent tank and decompose the reaction force using forms

Influence of Heave Plate Geometry on the Heave Response of Classic Spars
21st International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering, Volume 1, 2002A production spar designed for West African (WA) offshore conditions must consider possible resonance with long period swell, which might result in large amplitude heave oscillations. Preliminary study of a classic spar with diameter of 39 m (128 ft) and draft 198 m (650 ft) for a WA application led the authors to believe that excessive heave response ...

Heave damping of spar platform for offshore wind turbine with heave plate
Ocean Engineering, 2016This paper presents the effects of heave plate on heave damping of spar with single and two heave plates for supporting the offshore wind turbine. Heave free decay tests are carried out experimentally on 1:50 scale model of spar with single and two heave plates for finding the heave damping.

MODELLING THE HEAVE OSCILLATIONS OF VERTICAL CYLINDERS WITH DAMPING PLATES
International Journal of Maritime Engineering, 2021The laminar flow around heaving axisymmetric and three-dimensional cylinders with damping plates is numerically studied for various Keulegan-Carpenter numbers. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using OpenFOAM, which is applied to the flow on a moving mesh. For processing of results the semi-empirical Morison equation is used.
