Ruin problems for risk processes with dependent phase-type claims [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We consider continuous time risk processes in which the claim sizes are dependent and non-identically distributed phase-type distributions. The class of distributions we propose is easy to characterize and allows to incorporate the dependence between claims in a simple and intuitive way. It is also designed to facilitate the study of the risk processes

Thermochemical Recycling and Degradation Strategies of Halogenated Polymers (F−, Cl−, Br−): A Holistic Review Coupled with Mechanistic Insights

open access: yesThe Chemical Record, EarlyView.
This review aims to comprehensively address recent degradation techniques (physical, chemical and biological) of halogenated waste polymers with a prime focus on thermal degradation techniques. Exploiting various metal oxides during co‐pyrolysis is deemed a viable solution for recycling halogenated polymeric waste.

Resource‐driven changes in wild boar movement and their consequences for the spread of African Swine Fever in the Russian Far East

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Knowledge of animal movement patterns is invaluable to understanding the spread of diseases among wildlife populations. One example is the recent African swine fever (ASF) outbreak among wild boar Sus scrofa populations across East Asia, where there is a lack of information on movements of this species.

Affine Invariant Covariance Estimation for Heavy-Tailed Distributions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In this work we provide an estimator for the covariance matrix of a heavy-tailed multivariate distributionWe prove that the proposed estimator $\widehat{\mathbf{S}}$ admits an \textit{affine-invariant} bound of the form \[(1-\varepsilon) \mathbf{S ...

A comparison of thermal drones and camera trap population estimates for Sitka black‐tailed deer in Alaska

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
One of the most difficult challenges for wildlife managers is reliably estimating wildlife populations. Camera traps combined with spatial capture–recapture (SCR) models are a popular tool for population estimation. They have limitations, however, including long data processing times.

Approximation of Ruin Probabilities via Erlangized Scale Mixtures [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper, we extend an existing scheme for numerically calculating the probability of ruin of a classical Cram\'er--Lundberg reserve process having absolutely continuous but otherwise general claim size distributions.

Ruin under stochastic dependence between premium and claim arrivals [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
We investigate, focusing on the ruin probability, an adaptation of the Cramer-Lundberg model for the surplus process of an insurance company, in which, conditionally on their intensities, the two mixed Poisson processes governing the arrival times of the premiums and of the claims respectively, are independent.

How do Green Acquirers Select Targets? Value of Green Innovation in Takeovers

open access: yesBritish Journal of Management, EarlyView.
Abstract A burgeoning literature on green mergers and acquisitions (M&As) is based on the assumption that acquirers are polluting firms and buy targets with green resources to gain sustainable development, ignoring the fact that acquirers can also have green resources. This study explores how green acquirers select their targets and realize benefits in

Understanding heavy tails in a bounded world or, is a truncated heavy tail heavy or not? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We address the important question of the extent to which random variables and vectors with truncated power tails retain the characteristic features of random variables and vectors with power tails. We define two truncation regimes, soft truncation regime

Power-law distributions in binned empirical data

open access: yes, 2014
Many man-made and natural phenomena, including the intensity of earthquakes, population of cities and size of international wars, are believed to follow power-law distributions.
