Pri ugotavljanju poplavne varnosti vodotoka kot tudi načrtovanju ureditvenih ukrepov je treba izdelati hidrološko-hidravlično študijo, s katero se predvidi vpliv visokih voda na obravnavanem območju vodotoka. Za izdelavo hidravlične študije je danes na voljo mnogo programov, ki omogočajo preračune toka s prosto gladino za različne vrste in režime toka.
