Systematic point‐of‐care newborn screening for sickle cell disease in rural Mali, West Africa

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a leading cause of under‐five mortality in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA), yet newborn screening in rural settings remains scarce. We evaluated the feasibility, coverage and yield of a point‐of‐care (POC) screening programme at Koutiala Hospital for Women and Children (KHWC) in rural Mali, using HemotypeSC™.

Shoreline and deglaciation chronology in southeast Norway

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The postglacial relative sea level history is reconstructed in four areas of mid‐ and inner Oslofjorden in southeast Norway. The reconstructions are based on radiocarbon‐dated raised shoreline levels from 42 sites, mainly isolation basins, and limiting ages from four lakes above the marine limit.

Investigating Microinvasive Intra‐Ocular Biopsy

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Ophthalmology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Current minimally invasive methods of intraocular biopsy are confined to small gauge (G) needles and subretinal cannulae that can be prone to wound leakage at the biopsy site. We investigate the role of microneedles with internal diameters as small as 49G for intraocular biopsy in the posterior and anterior segments.

Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome 1 (MTDPS1)—A Novel Cause of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

open access: yesClinical Genetics, EarlyView.
We describe a woman with MNGIE due to a novel homozygous TYMP nonsense variant and propose MNGIE as the cause of her premature ovarian insufficiency—a rarely reported association—highlighting the need to consider mitochondrial disease in unexplained POI, especially in atypical, consanguineous presentations. ABSTRACT Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome
