Comparison of the effects of high and low milk-replacer feeding regimens on health and growth of crossbred dairy heifers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Context: Pre-weaning growth in dairy heifers is highly dependent on the amount of milk fed. Both milk replacer (MR) and associated labour are costly, encouraging restricted milk rations and once-a-day feeding.

Growth performance of neonatal Holstein heifers fed acidified waste milk containing essential oil blend and encapsulated butyrate alone or in combination

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: Previous research demonstrated the growth-promoting benefits of an essential oil and oligosaccharide blend (Stay Strong, Ralco, Inc.; EO) or an encapsulated sodium butyrate (C4; Ultramix GF, Adisseo, Inc.) fed to neonatal calves. The possibility exists

Relationship between Growth Pattern, Age at First Calving and Next Reproduction in Holstein Heifers

open access: yesJournal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, 2015
Growth rate during rearing, which varies depending on provided nutrition, has been related with age at 1st calving (AFC). This study investigated the effect of upgrowth parameters during the rearing period on the reproduction of nulliparous Holstein ...

Response to kisspeptin and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist administration in Holstein-Friesian dairy heifers with positive or negative genetic merit for fertility traits

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2022
: Previous research has identified that Holstein-Friesian dairy heifers with positive (POS) genetic merit for fertility traits (FertBV) reach puberty earlier than heifers with negative (NEG) FertBV.

The management and associated costs of rearing heifers on UK dairy farms from weaning to conception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Dairy heifers only start to produce a return on investment at first calving. The length of the nonproductive rearing period is largely governed by farmer decisions on plane of nutrition and reproduction management.

Effects of Clipping Heifer Hair Coats on Vaginal Temperatures and Performance of Fall-Born Heifers Stocked on Toxic Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue During the Summer

open access: yesGrasses
Achieving satisfactory levels of weight gain for developing replacement beef heifers is challenging when utilizing toxic endophyte-infected tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus) as the primary forage.

The influence of body and metabolic parameters in the period before sexual maturation in heifers on the lameness score during the first lactation [PDF]

open access: yesKafkas Universitesi Veteriner Fakültesi Dergisi
The aim of this research was to examine the relation between body and metabolic parameters in 105 young Holstein-Friesian cows in the period before puberty and locomotion score (LS) in the first lactation.

Influence of Ionophore Supplementation on Growth Performance, Dietary Energetics and Carcass Characteristics in Finishing Cattle during Period of Heat Stress. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Forty-eight crossbred heifers (378.1±18 kg) were used in a 56-d feeding trial (four pens per treatment in a randomised complete block design) to evaluate the influence of ionophore supplementation on growth performance, dietary energetics and carcass ...

The Herfindahl neutral point: A firm‐level threshold for managing market concentration with evidence from US hog packing

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper derives a firm‐level threshold, the Herfindahl Neutral Point, from the standard concentration index used in merger review. At this threshold, a marginal expansion leaves the index unchanged. Firms below the threshold reduce concentration when they expand; firms above it increase concentration.
