Compensatory Interplay Between Clarin‐1 and Clarin‐2 Deafness‐Associated Proteins Governs Phenotypic Variability in Hearing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Functional compensation between clarin‐1 and clarin‐2 in cochlear hair cells. Hearing loss associated with CLRN1 mutations shows striking phenotypic variability; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study reveals that clarin‐1 and clarin‐2 function cooperatively in cochlear hair cells to sustain mechanoelectrical ...

Ionospheric anomaly at the occurring time of China’s May 12, 2008, M = 7.9 Wenchuan Earthquake using nonlinear principal component analyses and image decoding

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Remote Sensing and Space Sciences, 2013
Nonlinear principal component analysis (NLPCA) and image decoding are used to determine the spatial pattern of a total electron content (TEC) map anomaly in the ionosphere above China’s Wenchuan earthquake of 12 May, 2008 (UT) (Mw = 7.9).

QCD Axion and Dark Energy

open access: yes, 2014
String allowed discrete symmetry is the mother of acceptable effective global symmetries at low energy. With this philosophy, we discuss dark energy, QCD axion, and inflation, and speculate some implications of the recent BICEP2 data.Comment: 5 pages, 2 ...

Inherently Disordered Auxetic Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inherently disordered auxetic metamaterials based on random chiral Delaunay triangulations are designed and investigated using numerical simulations and experimental tests. These disordered frameworks exhibit orthotropic behavior and a large negative Poisson's ratio (ca.

The Possible Influence of Arctic Sea Ice on the Precipitation Distribution Pattern of July in East of Northwest China

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang
Using the observed precipitation data of 154 meteorological stations in East of Northwest China, NCEP/NCAR atmosphere reanalysis and Arctic sea ice data from 1961 to 2020, the possible impacts and mechanisms of the key area Arctic sea ice on the main ...

Spectroscopic Evidence of Edge‐Localized States in an Antiferromagnet Topological Insulator NdBi

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using spin‐polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in conjunction with quasiparticle interference, we successfully identify distinct signatures of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic terminations in NdBi, a rare‐earth monopnictide exhibiting non‐trivial topology and magnetism. We demonstrate that step edges on ferromagnetic surfaces host well‐

F-Theory and the Mordell-Weil Group of Elliptically-Fibered Calabi-Yau Threefolds

open access: yes, 2012
The Mordell-Weil group of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X contains information about the abelian sector of the six-dimensional theory obtained by compactifying F-theory on X.

Tunable Sound Absorption via Evanescent‐Wave Coupling in Asymmetric Bilayer Metasurfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tunable sound absorption is realized through a bilayer metasurface system governed by evanescent‐wave coupling. This work demonstrates that such evanescent‐wave coupling provides a controllable scattering channel that destructively interferes with the specular reflection.

Graph-Based Memory Recall Recurrent Neural Network for Mid-Term Sea-Surface Height Anomaly Forecasting

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) plays a pivotal role in ocean dynamics and climate systems. This article develops a graph-based memory recall recurrent neural network (GMR-Net) to achieve accurate and reliable mid-term spatiotemporal prediction of the ...

Ocean Surface Anomalies after Strong Winds in the Western Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2019
The Western Mediterranean Sea is often subject to intense winds, especially during the winter season. Intense winds induce surface cooling associated with anomalous ocean heat loss, upwelling and diapycnal mixing. In this study we investigate the overall
