A metabarcoding protocol targeting two DNA regions to analyze root-associated fungal communities in ferns and lycophytes. [PDF]

open access: yesAppl Plant Sci, 2023
Abstract Premise Detailed studies of the fungi associated with lycophytes and ferns provide crucial insights into the early evolution of land plants. However, most investigations to date have assessed fern–fungus interactions based only on visual root inspection. In the present research, we establish and evaluate a metabarcoding protocol to analyze the

High species richness and turnover of vascular epiphytes is associated with water availability along the elevation gradient of Volcán Maderas, Nicaragua. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2022
We documented and examined patterns of species richness and abundance of tropical epiphytes along the entire elevational gradient of an isolated, island volcano. Our complete and detailed sampling along the gradient improves our understanding of vascular epiphyte distribution and its association to weather variables, based on direct observations.

A geoheritage valuation to prevent environmental degradation of a new volcanic landscape in the Canary Islands

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 34, Issue 9, Page 2494-2507, 30 May 2023., 2023
Abstract On 19 September 2021, a new monogenetic volcano (Tajogaite) erupted on the Island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). After 85 days of Strombolian style eruption, with emissions of volcanic material, a pyroclastic cone 200 m high and 800 m in its basal diameter was formed.

Phylogenetic revision of Dennstaedtioideae (Dennstaedtiaceae: Polypodiales) with description of Mucura, gen. nov.

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 72, Issue 1, Page 20-46, February 2023., 2023
Abstract We undertook a molecular phylogenetic revision of hayscented ferns (Dennstaedtiaceae: Dennstaedtioideae) using four plastid markers. Our sampling represents ca. 40% of the extant diversity and includes the type species for each of the relevant segregate genera.

Inception and Evolution of La Corona Lava Tube System (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 127, Issue 6, June 2022., 2022
Abstract Growing interest in studying large terrestrial lava tubes is motivated in part by their analogy with their extra‐terrestrial counterparts. However, on Earth, the formation of such structures is still poorly understood. Here, the lava tube system of La Corona (Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain) is studied to identify how pre‐existing ...

Reinterpretation of Paleoazolla: a heterosporous water fern from the Late Cretaceous of Patagonia, Argentina

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 107, Issue 7, Page 1054-1071, July 2020., 2020
Premise Undoubtedly, fossils are critical for understanding evolutionary transformations in deep time. Here, we reinvestigate the microspores and megaspores of Paleoazolla patagonica, a water fern found in Late Cretaceous sediments of the Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina, which provides novel evidence on the past history of the water fern clade ...

Ethnobotanical Research at the Kutukú Scientific Station, Morona‐Santiago, Ecuador

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2016, Issue 1, 2016., 2016
This work features the results of an ethnobotanical study on the uses of medicinal plants by the inhabitants of the region near to the Kutukú Scientific Station of Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, located in the Morona‐Santiago province, southeast of Ecuador. In the surroundings of the station, one ethnic group, the Shuar, has been identified.

Trait‐based species selection for restoration: A case study from tropical landscapes dominated by bracken

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results can be used by stakeholders to select the species best suited for active restoration projects in bracken‐dominated areas throughout the tropical region. Furthermore, our trait‐based approach, which considers seedling performance in disturbed areas, can serve as a guide for species selection in restoration programmes in other disturbed ...

Wood density variation across an Andes‐to‐Amazon elevational gradient

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2370-2385, September 2025.
We study how wood density varies along a 3500‐m elevational gradient, spanning from the Andean tree line to the Amazon basin. Our results reveal that wood density decreases from low to mid‐elevations, then increases toward the tree line. These patterns underscore the influence of species composition, life forms such as tree ferns, and local ...
