A Prototype Infant Incubator for Heliox Therapy
Biomedical Instrumentation & Technology, 2006Abstract Heliox (Hx) gas has been shown to improve pulmonary function in infants, but methods for its delivery are invasive and problematic. To this end, we modified an Isolette (Hill-Rom Air-Shields) infant incubator (Hxl) to deliver Hx respiratory gas mixtures noninvasively while providing thermal stability for neonatal care in the ...

Heliox in children with airway obstruction
Pediatric Emergency Care, 1997Although helium offers an additional tool in the treatment of various airway and pulmonary problems, it has no inherent therapeutic effects. As such, it can be used only as a temporizing agent to allow time for therapeutic agents to work or for the natural resolution of the disease process.

Heliox Use in the Treatment of Acute Hyperammonemia
Journal Of Child Neurology, 2001The objective of this study was to evaluate a new method for the treatment of acute hyperammonemia with a helium-oxygen mixture (heliox). We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled study of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Experimental hyperammonemia was induced by 7 days of a high-ammonia diet.

More About Heliox and Bronchiolitis
Pediatrics, 2002To the Editor .— The study by Martinon-Torres et al1 using heliox therapy in infants with acute bronchiolitis makes me question the diagnosis of “bronchiolitis” in those infants. It appears from the study that the use of heliox helped to decrease the work of breathing in these infants. It is conceivable that this was achieved by its property of having

Heliox is composed of oxygen and helium and its low specific gravity allows a modification of the gas flow within the airway. Breathing heliox favors a laminar flow and therefore decreases the work of breathing. Its usefulness in the child is established in croup or in post-extubation stridor.

Heliox for croup in children (Review)
2013Background: Croup is thought to be triggered by a viral infection and is characterised by respiratory distress due to upper airway inflammation and swelling of the subglottic mucosa in children. Mostly it is mild and transient and resolves with supportive care.
