Terrestrial gastropods (Helix spp) as sentinels of primary DNA damage for biomonitoring purposes: A validation study

Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis, 2013
We validated the alkaline comet assay in two species of land snail (Helix aspersa and Helix vermiculata) to test their suitability as sentinels for primary DNA damage in polluted environments. The study was conducted under the framework of a biomonitoring program for a power station in Central Italy that had recently been converted from oil to coal ...

Gastropod Learning and Memory (Aplysia, Hermissenda, Lymnaea, and Others)

, 2020
Euopisthobranchia (Aplysia), Nudipleura (Tritonia, Hermissenda, Pleurobranchaea), and Panpulmonata (Lymnaea, Helix, Limax) gastropod mollusks exhibit a variety of reflex, rhythmic, and motivated behaviors that can be modified by elementary forms of ...

Nervous system and neural maps in gastropodHelix lucorum L.

Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, 1994
The present review summarizes the literature and provides new data concerning nervous system structure and the identification of individual neurons in the snail Helix lucorum. Information about especially well-known neurons is provided in a table, and maps of the identifiable neuron's location in ganglia are correlated with the results of retrograde ...

Comparative study of the electrical and mechanical behaviour of an intact, semi-intact and isolated gastropode (Helix pomatia) smooth muscle preparation [PDF]

open access: possibleExperientia, 1975

Ultrastructure of spermiogenesis in the gastropodHeliacus variegatus (Architectonicidae), with description of a banded periaxonemal helix

Marine Biology, 1991
Spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of the marine gastropodHeliacus variegatus Gmelin were examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Mature spermatozoa are composed of an acrosomal vesicle, helical nucleus, elongate midpiece, annulus, glycogen piece and short end piece.

[The nervous system and the mapping of the neurons in the gastropod Helix lucorum L].

Zhurnal vysshei nervnoi deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova, 1993
Summarized literature and experimental author's data are presented concerning the structure of the nervous system and identification of individual neurons in the snail Helix lucorum. Information about especially well-known neurons is given in a table, maps of the ganglia are presented altogether with the results of retrograde staining of different ...

[In vitro biosynthesis of octopamine by the nervous system and the heart of the mollusc gastropode Helix pomatia (author's transl)].

Experientia, 1979
The tyrosine is decarboxylated in vitro by the central nervous tissue and by the intracardiac nervous tissue of Helix pomatia by aromatic amino-acid decarboxylase. The tyramine obtained is then partially transformed into octopamine by tyramine-beta-hydroxylase. The inhibition of monoamine oxidase favours apparition of the 2 amines.
