Exiles and innovators: a survey of heretics in sixteenth‐century Europe

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 26-40, February 2025.
Abstract The links between exile and innovation have often been studied in the case of the twentieth century, but much less in the case of early modern Europe – an age of some political exiles and many religious ones. This essay focuses on what has been called ‘the Reformation of the Refugees’ in the early sixteenth century.

A multidimensional assessment of Antarctic terrestrial biological data

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Aim The globally significant communities of terrestrial Antarctica face an uncertain future amid growing threats in the region. Emerging data‐driven approaches must be leveraged to predict and understand patterns of biodiversity across the continent.

Temperate alley‐cropping agroforestry improves pest control potential by promoting spider abundance and functional diversity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 12, Page 3079-3091, December 2024.
Overall, our findings highlight that the inclusion of tree rows benefited spiders across the entirety of the 48 m crop rows, independent of crop type. Since the peak in spider abundance and taxonomic diversity in crop rows coincided with crop pest arrival, alley‐cropping agroforestry is expected to benefit agricultural production through increased pest

Geometric and Semantic Coherence for UAV Path Planning and Safety Assessment

open access: yesDrones
Risk assessment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) path planning is a crucial step towards ensuring a safe UAV operation. However, achieving a reasonable risk assessment of UAV flight paths remains challenging because it involves multiple responsibilities ...

Summer temperatures from the Middle Pleistocene site Schöningen 13 II, northern Germany, determined from subfossil chironomid assemblages

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 53, Issue 4, Page 525-542, October 2024.
The manuscript presents the first subfossil chironomid record from the 300 000‐year‐old Reinsdorf sequence of the well‐known archaeological site Schöningen 13 II. We tested two geographically diverse recent chironomid–temperature calibration datasets for German lowland lake sediments and reconstructed summer air temperatures based on subfossil ...

Temperature and palaeolake evolution during a Middle Pleistocene interglacial–glacial transition at the Palaeolithic locality of Schöningen, Germany

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 53, Issue 4, Page 504-524, October 2024.
Biological proxy analyses, element composition, and stable isotope ratios at the Lower Palaeolithic locality of Schöningen provide evidence for repeated variations in climate, hydrology and catchment vegetation cover during MIS 9. Quantitative temperature reconstructions with the Mutual Ostracod Temperature Range method show colder winter temperatures ...

Fabrication of Plasmonic Microcubes by Laser Ablation of Au‐Nanoparticles‐Loaded Acrylate

open access: yesphysica status solidi (a), Volume 221, Issue 15, August 2024.
The fabrication of micron‐scale acrylate cuboids filled with plasmonic gold nanoparticles is investigated. UV‐curable acrylate films mixed with HAuCl4 are UV and thermally treated. The films are laser‐cut into micro‐cuboids and the functionalized micro‐particles are transferred into liquids.
