Ultrastructure of Synovial Membrane in Human Hemarthrosis

The synovium from six patients with hemarthrosis was studied, and the results were compared with those previously obtained from a study of experimental hemarthrosis in the rabbit. It was concluded that in both instances many shed erythrocytes escape from the joint by passing between synovial cells.

The case of a recurrent hemarthrosis of a total knee arthroplasty after the sixth postoperative month is described. Because of disabling pain, the patient underwent an explorative arthrotomy 18 months after implantation of the total knee arthroplasty.
