Predicting muscle patterns for hemimandibulectomy models

Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering, 2010
Deficits in movement and bite force are common in patients following segmental resection of the mandible consequent to oral cancer or injury. We have previously developed a dynamic model to analyse the biomechanics of an ungrafted segmental jaw resection with unilateral muscle and joint loss and post-surgical scarring.

Effects of hemimandibulectomy on quality of life

The Laryngoscope, 1998
AbstractObjective: To assess the quality of life and functional status of patients who have undergone hemimandibulectomy based on the type of reconstructive procedure performed. Study Design: Survey, retrospective. Methods: Twenty‐one patients who had undergone hemimandibulectomy and had similar defects were divided into two groups based on the ...

Three Different Techniques for Mandibular Reconstruction After Hemimandibulectomy

Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 1997
Mandibular reconstruction is a condition in which both bone defect and function must be restored. A wide range of approaches--from grafts to distant bone flaps--have been used for correcting bony defects. However, adequate mastication has been restored in only a few cases.

Recurrent ameloblastoma twenty-five years after hemimandibulectomy

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1956
Abstract The treatment of choice of a large ameloblastoma such as this, which has eroded through cortical bone, is radical resection. Yearly roentgenographic and clinical examination are necessary to determine the possibility of recurrence. A twenty-five-year cure can be considered a good result.

Preparing a hemimandibulectomy patient for delayed reconstructive surgery

American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, 2000
A rehabilitation device was designed and used before a reconstructive orthognathic procedure in an adult patient with a severe facial asymmetry. The asymmetry developed as a result of a left hemimandibulectomy in childhood. With this prototype device, the remaining hemimandible was gradually brought into its natural position and dynamics in order to ...

Photoelastic stress analysis of hemimandibulectomy bone reconstruction devices

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1981
The results presented show the relative importance of muscle force and occlusal resistance locations and prosthesis/hemimandible interface length. For the prosthesis design used, the addition of muscle function on the prosthesis side has little effect upon bone stress. However, occlusal resistance on the prosthesis side produces much more stress in the

Hemimandibulectomy without bone grafting: Report of a case

Head & Neck Surgery, 1986
AbstractSome patients require hemimandibulectomy who are poor candidates for reconstructive surgery or who do not want to subject themselves to multiple surgical episodes. With the use of an articulated external skeletal fixation appliance, near‐normal esthetics and function can be achieved in these patients without bone grafting.

Management of hemimandibulectomy using guide flange

Asian Journal of Oral Health and Allied Sciences
Patients with mandibular deviation following surgical hemi/segmental/subtotal mandibulectomy for a variety of reasons (squamous cell carcinoma being the most common cause) are administered a guide flange. The physician must wait for the lesion to heal, the graft to heal, or the radiotherapy effects to subside before proceeding with planned procedures ...

Prosthodontic rehabilitation of an edentulous hemimandibulectomy patient

International Journal of Preventive and Clinical Dental Research, 2020
Edentulous patients with lateral discontinuity defects of the mandible pose a challenge for the prosthodontist. With variable degrees of bony and soft-tissue resection, the prosthodontic prognosis is dependent on a number of complex factors. Complete dentures in such patients are primarily given for improvement of esthetics. In a selected few patients,

Mandibular reconstruction with the THORP condylar prosthesis after hemimandibulectomy

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1989
The subject of this paper is the evaluation of the advantages pertaining to the THORP (titanium hollow screw reconstruction plate) condylar prosthesis for reconstruction after hemimandibulectomy and exarticulation. The THORP condylar prosthesis is three-dimensionally adjustable, enabling the intraoperative meticulous functional adaptation of the ...
