Transsylvian functional hemispherectomy
Child's Nervous System, 2006To describe the technique of transsylvian-transventricular functional hemispherectomy developed at our institution. We review appropriate patient selection and evaluation, timing of surgery, selection of surgical approach, preoperative preparation, details of operative procedure, and postoperative management. The transsylvian "keyhole" functional ...

Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 1975
A series of ten cases of infantile hemiplegia with behaviour disorders and with or without fits treated by unilateral stereotactic amygdalotomy is described. Out of the eight cases with fits good relief was seen in six and amelioration of the seizures in two. The behavioural disorders were well controlled in all the patients.

Hemispherectomy is a valuable procedure in the management of seizure disorders caused by unilateral hemispheric disease. Modifications to anatomical hemispherectomy have been proposed to reduce the incidence of superficial cerebral hemosiderosis and hydrocephalus while still achieving seizure control.

Anatomical hemispherectomy is frequently employed in the surgical management of pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. In this chapter, we review the historical evolution of this surgical procedure, outline the indications and the criteria for selecting surgical candidates and describe the important pre-operative evaluation of the ...

Hemispherectomy in man (ablation of the cortex, the underlying white matter and nucleus lentiformis) was performed first by Dandy (1928, 1933), later by Gardner (1939) and a few others, on adult patients suffering from large infiltrating tumours of the subdominant hemisphere, with one exception (Zollinger, 1935).

Hemispherectomy techniques have undergone multiple changes. Because of these changes, several current alternatives are described. The need for an extensive procedure in young children with special pediatric requirements is the background for the development of newer and more microsurgically oriented techniques aimed at reducing the intraoperative ...

Hemispherectomy, or hemidecorticectomy as it is more accurately described, has been highly effective in reducing or eliminating medically intractable seizures associated with hemiplegia. Because of late onset postoperative superficial cerebral hemosiderosis and its associated neurologic deterioration, this procedure was all but abandoned for years ...

Summary This paper reviews the British and American literature regarding the application of hemispherectomy to children suffering from infantile hemiplegia, intractable seizures, emotional outbursts, and mental retardation. While investigators differ in the amount and kind of information they report, certain trends are evident when the 29 cases are ...

Evoked Responses After Hemispherectomy
Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 1971Somatosensory, visual and auditory evoked responses were studied in a left hemispherectomized patient. Median nerve stimulation and light flashes produced typical answers over only the unoperated hemisphere. However, on the operated side low voltage long latency (60–100 msec) responses of about 100 msec duration, as well as waves in the <i>α< ...
