Vertical Parasagittal Hemispherotomy
World NeurosurgeryHemispherotomy is a surgical procedure aimed at the treatment of hemispheric epilepsy. Hemispherotomy disconnects the commissural fibers, projecting fibers, and limbic system while preserving most of the brain parenchyma, unlike conventional hemispherectomy.1 Hemispherotomy is one of most complicated operations currently used in epilepsy surgery and ...

Hemispherotomy and Functional Hemispherectomy: Indications and Outcome
Epilepsy Research, 2010Peri-insular hemispherotomy is a disconnective procedure that enables functional isolation of single or multiple epileptogenic regions largely involving one hemisphere. This report is based on a consecutive series of 13 pediatric patients affected by refractory hemispheric epilepsy studied and operated on at the Neurological Institute "C.

Hemispherotomy in an infant with hemimegalencephaly and Ohtahara syndrome [PDF]
We represent the case of a premature twin neonate born from uncomplicated pregnancy who developed seizures at the age of 24 h. Two-dimensional ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging revealed left-sided hemimegalencephaly. Further extensive diagnostic evaluation revealed a diagnosis of Ohtahara syndrome.

Aventricular hemispherotomy: technical note
Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, 2020Hemispheric disconnection in the form of hemispherectomy or hemispherotomy is the most effective way of treating intractable hemispheric epilepsy. Anatomical hemispherectomy approaches have largely been abandoned in most cases due to a higher risk of superficial hemosiderosis, intraoperative blood loss, hydrocephalus, prolonged hospital stay, and ...

THE NATURE OF functional hemispherectomy continues to be misunderstood despite its 20-year history. Recently, we introduced the concept of peri-insular hemispherotomy, a functional hemispherectomy with minimal brain removal (9, 21). To avoid additional confusion, a detailed neuroanatomic account of this operation, which has been performed in 11 ...
