Sparse logistic regression on functional data [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Motivated by a hemodialysis monitoring study, we propose a logistic model with a functional predictor, called the Sparse Functional Logistic Regression (SFLR), where the corresponding coefficient function is {\it locally sparse}, that is, it is completely zero on some subregions of its domain.

Hemodialysis Induces an Acute Decline in Cerebral Blood Flow in Elderly Patients.

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2018
The initiation of hemodialysis is associated with an accelerated decline of cognitive function and an increased incidence of cerebrovascular accidents and white matter lesions.

Converting Hemodialysis (HD) membranes to Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machines [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Crises like COVID-19 can create a massive unmet demand for rare blood oxygenation membrane machines for impaired lungs: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machines. Meanwhile, Hemodialysis (HD) machines, which use membranes to supplement failing kidneys, are extremely common and widespread, with orders of magnitude more available than for ECMO ...

A Semi-supervised Learning Approach for B-line Detection in Lung Ultrasound Images [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Studies have proved that the number of B-lines in lung ultrasound images has a strong statistical link to the amount of extravascular lung water, which is significant for hemodialysis treatment. Manual inspection of B-lines requires experts and is time-consuming, whilst modelling automation methods is currently problematic because of a lack of ground ...

Patient Perspectives on the Meaning and Impact of Fatigue in Hemodialysis: A Systematic Review and Thematic Analysis of Qualitative Studies.

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Kidney Diseases, 2019
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Fatigue is a highly prevalent and debilitating symptom in patients on hemodialysis therapy due to the uremic milieu, the hemodialysis treatment itself, and other comorbid conditions.

Sparse Positive-Definite Estimation for Covariance Matrices with Repeated Measurements [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Repeated measurements are common in many fields, where random variables are observed repeatedly across different subjects. Such data have an underlying hierarchical structure, and it is of interest to learn covariance/correlation at different levels. Most existing methods for sparse covariance/correlation matrix estimation assume independent samples ...

International Comparisons of Prevalence, Awareness, and Treatment of Pruritus in People on Hemodialysis.

open access: yesAmerican Society of Nephrology. Clinical Journal, 2017
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Uremic pruritus in patients on hemodialysis is associated with depression, lower quality of life, and mortality. We studied the prevalence, awareness, and treatment of pruritus to assess how well this important condition is ...

Nocturnal hemodialysis

open access: yesIndian Journal of Nephrology, 2012
Patients receiving conventional hemodialysis have high hospitalisation rates, poor quality of life and survival compared to the general population. Many centres around the world are providing longer hours of hemodialysis - short daily hemodialysis and nocturnal hemodialysis - with a view to improving patient survival and quality of life.

Flow and filtration imaging of single use sterile membrane filters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Sterile filters incorporating endotoxin adsorption function emerged recently to pretreat dialysate liquids fed to a hemodialysis filtration process. Their application significantly enhances the survival rate during dialysis treatment as they function as sterile filters as well as an endotoxin adsorber.

Evaluating epoetin dosing strategies using observational longitudinal data [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Statistics 2014, Vol. 8, No. 4, 2356-2377, 2015
Epoetin is commonly used to treat anemia in chronic kidney disease and End Stage Renal Disease subjects undergoing dialysis, however, there is considerable uncertainty about what level of hemoglobin or hematocrit should be targeted in these subjects. In order to address this question, we treat epoetin dosing guidelines as a type of dynamic treatment ...
