Current Opinion in Hematology, 2013
Blood coagulation exists to halt excessive blood loss. It is paradoxical that surgery and trauma simultaneously represent major risk factors for both hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications. A summary of the available evidence used to guide contemporary approaches to perioperative care will be reviewed.Although the advent of factor-specific products ...

AbstractHemostatic abnormalities are present in a majority of patients with metastatic cancer. These abnormalities can be categorized as 1) increased platelet aggregation and activation, 2) abnormal activation of coagulation cascade, 3) release of plasminogen activator, and 4) decreased hepatic synthesis of anticoagulant proteins like Protein C and ...

Blood Coagulation & Fibrinolysis, 2022
The breakdown of vascular integrity triggers a series of reactions, initially involving a vasoconstriction phenomenon that reduces blood loss and leads to platelet plug formation under changing flow conditions. Once the platelet plug has formed, the coagulation system is activated in order to allow the formation of fibrin ...

There is considerable evidence that the hemostatic system is involved in the growth and spread of malignant disease. There is an increased incidence of thromboembolic disease in patients with cancers and hemostatic abnormalities are extremely common in such patients.

Total thyroidectomy has significantly changed over the years from a morbid procedure to one that is performed routinely on an outpatient basis. This article reviews the history of thyroid surgery with regard to hemostasis, discusses surgical vascular anatomy, and describes the methods of hemostasis.

Dermatologic Clinics, 1994
As dermatologists perform more complex and extensive surgical procedures, persistent bleeding and hematoma formation may be encountered more frequently. Several hints for hemostasis are presented that will help dermatologists prevent uncontrolled hemorrhage and manage bleeding complications.

The normal hemostatic system is complex yet exquisitely well regulated. Interrelationships exist between responses of the vasculature, circulating platelets, coagulation proteins, and fibrinolytic mechanism. These relationships serve to limit blood loss, preserve tissue perfusion, and stimulate local repair processes.

The great majority of viral infections are not associated with significant alterations in hemostasis. Occasionally, common viral pathogens lead to illnesses in which hemostatic impairment is an important feature. In these instances, two clinical syndromes usually are present: thrombocytopenic purpura and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Tonsillectomy is a commonly performed procedure with an accepted risk of posttonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) approaching 5%, but catastrophic effects of hemorrhage are exceedingly rare. A variety of surgical techniques and hemostatic agents have been used to reduce the rate of hemorrhage, although none eliminate the risk. Numerous patient, surgical, and
