Extracorporeal Albumin Dialysis (OPAL) as Novel Therapeutic Bridging Option in Posthepatectomy Liver Failure

Extracorporeal albumin dialysis (OPAL) effectively reduces bilirubin and improves other laboratory markers in posthepatectomy liver failure, particularly in secondary forms. It may serve as a bridging therapy to support hepatic recovery in critically ill patients, although prospective studies are needed to confirm its impact on survival.

Confirmed Autochthonous Case of Human Alveolar Echinococcosis, Italy, 2023

Emerging Infectious Diseases
In September 2023, a patient in Italy who had never traveled abroad was referred for testing for suspected hepatic cystic echinococcosis. Lesions were incompatible with cystic echinococcosis; instead, autochthonous alveolar echinococcosis was confirmed.
