Effect of structured use of preoperative portal vein embolization on outcomes after liver resection of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 449-455, June 2020., 2020
The use of portal vein embolization (PVE) in patients undergoing major liver resection for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma at the authors' centre increased from 6·4 per cent in 2000–2015 to 32 per cent in 2016–2019. This increased use of PVE coincided with a major decrease in the postoperative liver failure rate, from 19·9 to 4 per cent, and a decrease in

Liver transplantation for unresectable colorectal liver metastases in patients and donors with extended criteria (SECA‐II arm D study)

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 467-477, June 2020., 2020
Patients with extensive liver tumour load and a mainly poorly differentiated N2 primary tumour have short overall survival from the time of liver transplantation. Relapses were mostly unresectable and the patients had short survival from the time of relapse. These patients should not be offered liver transplantation.

Total tumour volume as a prognostic factor in patients with resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 3, Page 456-466, June 2020., 2020
This study investigated whether the total tumour volume (TTV) of colorectal liver metastases could predict patient survival after hepatic resection. Associations were identified between TTV and recurrence‐free survival, overall survival and unresectable recurrence after primary hepatic resection.
