ON MNIUM TRICHOMANIS LINNAEUS (HEPATOPHYTA)
TAXON, 1983SummaryThe initial use of the name Mnium in the generic sense contained not only species of mosses but two liverworts as well, namely, M. trichomanis L. and M.fissum L. These hepatic species, now regarded as validly published in accordance with the I.C.B.N., have long been recognized as segregates within the genus Calypogeja Raddi.

As in other hepatics, the young spermatid of Blasia pusilla contains a well‐developed blepharoplast comprising a four‐layered multilayered structure (MLS) and two overlying dimorphic basal bodies. The asymmetrical spline (S1 or upper stratum of the MLS) numbers 20 or 21 microtubules (MTs) at its anterior tip and reduces to eight at the posterior limit ...

summaryAn aseptate fungus associated with the gametophyte of the hepatic Conocephalum conicum (L.) Dum. was studied by light and electron microscopy. The fungus forms a highly branched mycelium external to the plant. Fungal hyphae colonize the smooth‐walled rhizoids, through which they pass into the gametophyte parenchyma of the midrib.

When Cryptothallus dries out over periods of 4–20 days, the dorsal surfaces of the thalli become covered with multicellular hairs. The distribution of mucilage papillae and the endophytic fungus are not affected by desiccation. The hairs are thin walled and highly vacuolated whereas the mucilage papillae, like their secretory counterparts in ...
