First Case of Clinical Canine Hepatozoonosis in the Ukraine

open access: yes
Canine hepatozoonosis is caused by the tick-borne protozoans Hepatozoon canis and Hepatozoon americanum (Apicomplexa, Hepatozoidae). While H. americanum is widespread in the south-central and south-eastern United States, H. canis is documented in Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America, and is transmitted to dogs by ingesting infected ticks, primarily ...

Vector-Borne Pathogens in Stray Cats in Eastern Germany (Thuringia)

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
Bacterial, protozoal, and viral vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) can cause infections in cats. There is little information on feline VBP prevalence in Germany. Stray cats are frequently exposed to vectors but receive no veterinary care.

Prevalence and Sequence Analysis of Vector-Borne Zoonotic Diseases in Stray Cats in Istanbul. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Med Sci
Istanbul, the largest metropolis in Türkiye, is home to a notable population of stray cats. While cats enrich the city's culture, they can also transmit various diseases, posing diagnostic challenges for clinicians. This study aimed to detect infections in stray cats using PCR and sequencing to identify Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Bartonella, Hepatozoon ...

Primary pyomyositis and uveitis in a cat

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 9, Issue 5, Page 1959-1964, September 2023., 2023

Detection and molecular identification of blood parasites in rodents captured from urban areas of southern Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 2059-2066, September 2022., 2022
Out of 13 samples, 69.2% (n = 9) were detected with Hepatocystis sp., while 15.4% (n = 2) were positive with Hepatozoon ophisauri. Two individuals had multiple infections from both species. This information is essential for the future prevention of zoonotic outbreaks and surveillance programmes.

Etiology and outcome of extreme neutrophilic leukocytosis: A multi‐institutional retrospective study of 269 dogs

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 541-548, March 2022., 2022
Abstract Background The magnitude of diagnostic abnormalities can influence the perception of clinical outcome. Extreme neutrophilic leukocytosis (ENL) is an uncommon finding caused by markedly increased granulopoiesis. A lack of recent, large‐scale studies limits our understanding of the importance, causation, and prognosis associated with ENL in dogs.

An analysis of companion animal tick encounters as revealed by photograph‐based crowdsourced data

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 7, Issue 6, Page 2198-2208, November 2021., 2021
Crowdsourced data reveal that mostly adult ticks are spotted on pets, and that they are detected later in the blood‐feeding process than were ticks attached to humans, putting pets at heightened risk for tick‐borne disease transmission. The doubling of reports of ticks found on pets during autumn and winter may reveal a critical knowledge gap amongst ...
