A phylogenomic approach for a new infrageneric classification of Bulbostylis (Abildgaardieae, Cyperaceae)

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
In this study, we investigate the relationships among 149 species of Bulbostylis (Cyperaceae)—representing 69% of global diversity—using a universal probe kit for targeted genomic sequencing of flowering plants (Angiosperms353 probe kit). Our sampling also includes the genus Nelmesia, which we found to fall within Bulbostylis.

Diversification and coexistence amid widespread and persistent gene flow in Andean trees

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Andean Prunus species diversify into and occupy distinct elevation zones, remaining morphologically distinct. Yet, ancient introgression and recent admixture cross both phylogenetic and ecological distances. This suggests these species function as a long‐lived syngameon rather than fully isolated lineages, which may help explain how tree diversity ...

Evolutionary shifts to gynomonoecy correlate with changes in capitulum architecture in South African Helichrysum (Asteraceae)

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Representative South African Helichrysum species illustrating variation in capitulum size. Summary Gynomonoecy has evolved repeatedly in Asteraceae, suggesting selective advantages for species whose capitula combine pistillate and bisexual flowers. Theories invoking conspicuous peripheral flowers and achene heteromorphism do not account for gynomonoecy

Reconstructing Cenozoic grasslands in North America and western Eurasia: evidence for cold‐season grasses from 3D phytolith morphology

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Pie charts illustrate the composition of fossil grass silica short‐cell phytolith (GSSCP) assemblages at investigated fossil sites in the United States and Türkiye and representative 3D meshes of classified phytoliths. Summary Pooideae, the largest grass subfamily, radiated in the Northern Hemisphere from the Paleocene onward and today dominates cold ...

Hidden Strategies Beneath a Single Nucleotide: Contrasting Physiology in Lichen Photobiont Strains

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Lichen photobionts exhibit significant physiological variability with important ecological implications. While this variability is relatively well studied at the interspecific level, it has rarely been examined at the intraspecific level. Here, we investigated the physiological responses to temperature and irradiance of two Trebouxia lynniae ...

Mixed‐vertebrate pollination traits and pollinators of Haageocereus acranthus (Cactaceae) in a lomas desert ecosystem of coastal Peru

open access: yesPlant Biology, EarlyView.
In a lomas desert ecosystem of coastal Peru, the columnar cactus Haageocereus acranthus shows traits and interactions consistent with a mixed‐vertebrate pollination system (hummingbirds and bats), with no detectable differences between flower colour morphotypes in either traits or interactions.
