Regulation of Nitrogen Fixation in Herbaspirillum seropedicae

Herbaspirillum seropedicae is an aerobic, plant-associated, nitrogen-fixing bacterium of the β-proteobacteria group. Nitrogen fixation in this organism is repressed by ammonium ions or oxygen, and nitrogenase switch-off by ammonium ions is partial and does not involve ADP-ribosylation (Klasssen et al., unpublished). Together with many plant pathogenic pseudomonads, as the genus Pseudomonas has been revised over the past twenty years, organisms within these two genera have been taxonomically reclassified.

Lipopolysaccharides of Herbaspirillum species and their relevance for bacterium–host interactions

The lipopolysaccharides of Herbaspirillum lusitanum P6-12T (HlP6-12T) and H. frisingense GSF30T (HfGSF30T) was isolated by phenol-water extraction from bacterial cells and was characterized using chemical analysis and SDS-PAGE. It was shown that these bacteria produce LPSs that differ in their physicochemical properties and macromolecular organization.
