Preditores locais e de paisagem da herbivoria em cultivos de milho e feijão na Caatinga [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
The Earth’s land surface occupied by agricultural fields are predicted to expand by up 30% until 2050. Despite the relevance of crop production to ensure food safety to the world growing population, land-use changes generated by ‘modern’ agricultural ...

Foliar herbivory pushes plant individuals towards the periphery of a plant–floral visitor interaction network

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2414-2428, September 2025.
The authors demonstrate how the effects of herbivory on a key plant trait can cascade to shape the interactions between individual plants and their flower visitors and how the indirect effects between herbivores and pollinators can modulate the structure of interaction networks in terrestrial ecosystems.

Endogenous rhythmic growth and ectomycorrhizal fungi modulate priming of antiherbivore defences in subsequently formed new leaves of oak trees

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 6, Page 1382-1396, June 2025.
A first herbivore attack primes direct and indirect defences of newly formed oak leaves and, the specific display of defence priming is regulated by rhythmic growth, and modulated by the interaction with the ectomycorrhizal fungus Piloderma croceum. Therefore, the priming memory in oaks can be transmitted to the next growth cycle. GC, growth cycle; SF,

Phytotoxicity of the extracts of Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus Hassl. (Fabaceae) leaflets and galls on seed germination and early development of lettuce Fitotoxidade diferencial dos extratos aquosos de folíolos e galhas de Lonchocarpus muelhbergianus Hassl. (Fabaceae) na germinação e desenvolvimento inicial de alface

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2008
Galls induced by Euphalerus ostreoides (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) cause structural and chemical alterations on Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus leaflets. Healthy and galled leaflet tissues of this plant species are rich in secondary metabolites with potential ...

Evaluating the role of frequency‐dependent selection in controlling the expansion of clonal aggregations in the tropical forest's understorey: Insights from a decade‐long experiment

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 3, Page 851-862, March 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Sexual reproduction, despite its associated costs and risks, is prevalent among many organisms, presumably to generate and maintain genetic diversity. This diversity is vital for adapting to environmental changes and combating natural enemies.

Density-dependent seed predation in Attalea geraensis Barb. Rodr. (Arecaceae) caused by bruchid beetles in the Brazilian Cerrado

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2018
Palms are an important component of Neotropical communities as they are often diverse and abundant. In some areas, palms occur in high density and act as limiting factor in tree recruitment by limiting tree seedling and sapling abundance.

Testing the contribution of vertebrate predators and leaf traits to mainland–island differences in insect herbivory on oaks

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 1, Page 140-154, January 2025.
The authors explored how insularity influences herbivory in oaks across island–mainland sites. By experimentally excluding vertebrate predators (e.g. birds, bats) and measuring leaf traits (e.g. phenolics, specific leaf area, nutrients), they provide insights into the mechanisms driving island–mainland herbivory patterns.

The importance of natural history studies for a better comprehension of animal-plant interaction networks

open access: yesBioscience Journal, 2013
The central tendency in ecological studies to explain variations in the outcomes of biotic interactions is to suppose that the majority of meaningful functional diversity occurs at the species level.

Discreet but diverse and specific: Determining plant‐herbivore interactions across a species‐rich plant family in a tropical rain forest

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 1, January 2025.
We conducted a year‐long study in Ecuador's Yasuní National Park, focusing on nine understory Annonaceae species to investigate herbivory patterns and herbivore‐host associations. Our findings revealed significant temporal fluctuations in leaf damage, with Anaxagorea brevipes and Unonopsis veneficiorum experiencing higher herbivore pressure, and ...
