Hermetia illucens, the black soldier fly, is a dipteran of the family Stratiomyidae. This detritivorous insect is increasingly used in mass production to reduce bio-waste and produce food for aquaculture and poultry farms. It originates from the north of Latin America and has spread over much of the planet.
