The records of 26 children with femoral hernia are reviewed. In five patients, inguinal herniotomy had been performed previously. The correct diagnosis was made preoperatively in 7 (27%) of the cases only. The operation included a repair narrowing the femoral canal in all but 5 cases. At follow-up 1/2-19 1/2 years no recurrence was found.

Summary Femoral hernia in children is infrequently encountered and represents less than 1 per cent of all hernias in children, consequently no one surgeon has enjoyed any extensive experience in the operative management of this defect. A historical review of femoral hernioplasty in children has failed to produce a unanimity of opinion as to the ...

Femoral herniae are uncommon in children and easily misdiagnosed. To evaluate performance with femoral hernia in children, the authors reviewed their experience for the past two decades. All patients under 15 years of age with femoral hernia (January 1977 to January 1998) were reviewed.

Abstract Between 1925 and 1965, 35 children with femoral hernia were operated on at the Hospital For Sick Children, Toronto. Twelve patients had previous bilateral inguinal herniotomies. The frequency of irreducibility, incarceration or strangulation which occurred in 7 patients indicates the advisability of early operation.

Abstract Two cases of children with bilateral femoral hernias that were repaired by the Cooper's ligament method are presented. The literature regarding cause and treatment of femoral hernia is reviewed. The Cooper's ligament repair is believed to be the technic of choice, since it effectively closes the femoral ring in an anatomic fashion.

Femoral hernias occurred in 216 patients in a period of six years, with an overall recurrence rate of 6.5%. The McVay repair, used in cases of strangulation, incarceration, and recurrence, as well many routine cases, was performed upon 101 patients; the McVay Moschcowitz repair was performed upon 23 patients.

In most cases of femoral hernia the diameter of the femoral canal, through which the femoral hernia protrudes, is quite narrow, often measuring less than 1.5 cm. By approaching the hernia from below, it is simple to free the sac, open it, reduce the hernia, and amputate the sac.

This is a report of a personal series of 10 children seen with femoral hernias over a 15-yr-period. Femoral hernia in this age group is rare and a correct preoperative diagnosis is often overlooked. In nine of the 10 patients the preoperative diagnosis was correct.

Abstract Of 1,101 consecutive primary femoral hernia repairs performed at Shouldice Hospital, Toronto, during the twenty-five year period between January 1, 1945 and January 1, 1970, 687 were performed in men and 414 in women. There were 362 instances of ipsilateral primary inguinal hernia in men and only 48 in women, so that 325 primary femoral ...
