Sportsman's hernia (SH) is a controversial cause of chronic groin pain in athletes. Most commonly seen in soccer and ice hockey players, SH can be encountered in a variety of sports and in a variety of age groups. Although there are several reports of SH in women, it is almost exclusively found in men.

AbstractThe diagnosis of spigelian hernia presents greater difficulties than its treatment. The clinical presentation varies, depending on the contents of the hernial sac and the degree and type of herniation. The pain, which is the most common symptom, varies and there is no typical pain of spigelian hernia.

The laparoscopic repair of paraesophageal hernia has proven to be safe and effective, with relatively low morbidity and mortality rates. The laparoscopic approach is feasible in patients with paraesophageal hernia because these patients are usually past middle age and commonly have multiple other medical problems. We report a case of a hernia through the pelvic floor presenting as a paravaginal mass following a transvaginal fascial sling procedure. At exploration herniation through a defect in the pelvic floor was identified and repaired. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of levator hernia.

Traumatic herniae are uncommon. We describe two patients with traumatic herniae and review the literature. Operative treatment may be early or late. It is mandatory that traumatic herniae be differentiated from hematomata. Diagnosis is usually clinical but X-rays including barium studies, may be useful.

Over a 10 year period, four patients with paraduodenal hernia were encountered. Two had small hernias that were incidental findings at the time of surgery for an unrelated abdominal condition; these were managed by suture closure of the neck of the sac. The other two patients presented with intestinal obstruction and are discussed here with a review of

Langenbecks Archiv fur Chirurgie. Supplement. Kongressband. Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Chirurgie. Kongress, 1998Within the range of treatment of inguinal hernias, the paper concentrates on the following procedures: Shouldice, the "tension-free" repairs of Lichtenstein, Rutkow, TIPP, and the laparoscopic procedures TAPP and TEP.
