PCR detection of Heterakis gallinarum in environmental samples
Veterinary Parasitology, 2019Heterakis gallinarum is a widely distributed cecal nematode that parasitizes gallinaceous birds including chickens and turkeys. H. gallinarum infection poses a problem for the poultry industry as the nematode egg serves as a vector for the protozoan parasite, Histomonas meleagridis, the causative agent of histomonosis.

An In Vitro Assay of Disinfectants on the Viability of Heterakis gallinarum Eggs
Avian Diseases, 2019Nematodes are widespread and common in poultry. Disinfectants are used to reduce infection rates in poultry houses, but there is little documentation of their effectiveness. An in vitro assay was developed to test the efficacy of products to damage Heterakis gallinarum eggs, and nine disinfectants and chemicals commonly used in the poultry industry ...

The role of oxygen availability in the embryonation of Heterakis gallinarum eggs
International Journal for Parasitology, 2000The importance of oxygen availability in the embryonation of the infective egg stages of the gastrointestinal nematode parasite Heterakis gallinarum was studied in the laboratory. Unembryonated H. gallinarum eggs were kept under either aerobic conditions by gassing with oxygen, or anaerobic conditions by gassing with the inert gas nitrogen, under a ...

THE WILD TURKEY AS A HOST FOR Heterakis gallinarum AND Histomonas meleagridis
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1975Freshly embryonated eggs of Heterakis gallinarum gathered from naturally infected domestic turkeys and chickens developed the first 4 weeks essentially as well in young wild turkeys as in domestic poults, but then became progressively retarded and failed in most birds to result in females with fertile eggs.

Co-expulsion of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum by chickens
International Journal for Parasitology, 2018Worm expulsion is known to occur in mammalian hosts exposed to mono-species helminth infections, whilst this phenomenon is poorly described in avian hosts. Mono-species infections, however, are rather rare under natural circumstances. Therefore, we quantified the extent and duration of worm expulsion by chickens experimentally infected with both ...

Heterakis gallinarum, the Cecal Nematode of Gallinaceous Birds: A Critical Review
Avian Diseases, 2019Heterakis gallinarum is a heavily prevalent poultry parasite that thrives in the ceca of various species of gallinaceous birds. It is a small roundworm, measuring between 4 and 15 mm long, in the family Heterakidae. Heterakis gallinarum has a direct life cycle not requiring an intermediate host to complete development, and it is generally believed that

Effects of X-ray dosages on development of Heterakis gallinarum
Experimental Parasitology, 1966Abstract Exposure of unsegmented eggs of Heterakis gallinarum to X-irradiation (4,000 to 120,000 R) revealed that dosages up to 64,000 R retarded embryogenesis and 120,000 R appeared lethal. At 64,000 R, the majority of eggs required 15 days longer incubation to develop to infective larvae than did the controls.

Experimental Infections with Histomonas meleagridis and Heterakis gallinarum in Ducks and Geese
The Journal of Parasitology, 1974Heterakis gallinarum and Histomonas meleagridis have been reported sporadically from ducks and geese. Experimentally, neither bird could be infected by rectal inoculation of H. meleagridis until a strain of Histomonas was isolated that had multiplied in geese following its introduction by eggs of Heterakis gallinarum. H.

Post-Labial Sensory Structures on the Cecal Worm, Heterakis gallinarum
The Journal of Parasitology, 1976Sense organs that lie just posterior to the lips on the sides of the body of Heterakis gallinarum have been examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The sense organs appear externally as a short peg surrounded by a collarlike elevation of cuticle.

Oogenesis and egg shell formation in Heterakis gallinarum (Nematoda)
Journal of Zoology, 1971The structure of the developing ova and egg shell formation of Heterakis gallinarum has been described. The oogonia are small, undifferentiated cells which are arranged around a central cytoplasmic rachis. The oogonia and young oocytes are in cytoplasmic continuity with the rachis and it is suggested that the rachis may influence synchronous ...
