We report a strategy for the catalytic conversion of lignosulfonate into phenols over heterogeneous nickel catalysts. Aryl-alkyl bonds (C-O-C) and hydroxyl groups (-OH) are hydrogenated to phenols and alkanes, respectively, without disturbing the arenes.
