Nietzsche and Pessoa's Heteronyms
Partial Answers: Journal of Literature and the History of Ideas, 2012The ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche – in particular the will to power – are patent in the psychology and writings of Álvaro de Campos, who was supposedly born on the philosopher’s birthday, October 15th. Prose pieces such as “Notes for a non-Aristotelian Aesthetics,” with its definition of art as “a struggle to dominate others” and its notion of an ...

Heteronyms as Virtual Subjects
2020Abstract The authorial act of heteronymic self-transformation is quite different from that of inventing a character in a story. What is fundamental to the notion of a heteronym is that it is an othered I, ‘lived by the author within himself’, that is to say, lived first-personally.

Homonymous and heteronymous monosynaptic reflexes in biceps brachii
Muscle & Nerve, 1995AbstractUsing poststimulus time histograms, it has been reported that stimulation of the median nerve at the elbow produces a monosynaptic EPSP in voluntarily active single motoneurons of the human biceps brachii. The present study was undertaken to: (i) determine whether such stimulation could evoke a reproducible reflex response in biceps brachii ...

Reproducibility of a heteronymous monosynaptic reflex in biceps brachii
Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology/Electromyography and Motor Control, 1995The present study provides normal data for a new technique to assess conduction across the C5/C6 segments by recording a heteronymous monosynaptic reflex response from the contracting biceps brachii in response to stimulation of the median nerve in the cubital fossa.

Brain Research, 2001
The aims were (i) to investigate heteronymous excitatory and inhibitory Group Ia reflexes linking agonist/antagonist muscle pairs acting at the shoulder and elbow; clavicular pectoralis major (Pmajor) and posterior deltoid (Pdeltoid); biceps brachii (Bi) and Tri brachii (Tri), and linking muscles acting at the elbow (Bi and Tri) with muscles acting at ...

This article discusses The Duke of Parma, taking its cue from Richard Zenith’s definition of it as a Shakespearean exercise. It develops the idea of exercise by studying the relationship Pessoa had with his literary sources, focussing in particular on the analogies between this play and the nineteenth-century vogue of neo-Renaissance drama, and using ...

Heteronymous H-reflex in Temporal Muscle Motor Units
Journal of Dental Research, 1998An electric stimulation of the masseteric nerve elicits a heteronymous H-reflex in the temporal muscle. The characteristics of this reflex response were investigated by analysis of the firing probability changes of single motor units. Eleven healthy subjects participated in the experiments.

Fernando Pessoa's Heteronymic Machine

Pattern of heteronymous recurrent inhibition in the human lower limb
Experimental Brain Research, 1994Changes in the firing probability of motor units belonging to leg and thigh muscles were used to describe the pattern of distribution of recurrent inhibition evoked by motor discharges from various motor nuclei in the human lower limb. Discharges of units in soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, peroneus brevis, tibialis anterior, quadriceps and biceps ...

The art of rumination: Pessoa’s heteronyms revisited
Journal of Romance Studies, 2003The concept of rumination was first used in literary theory by Friedrich Schlegel, who once defined literary critics pejoratively as ruminating readers. Later, Nietzsche gave the concept a semi-humorous twist by stating that a good reader in modernity must be a cow.
