Divergent rainforest tree microbiomes between phases of the monsoon cycle, host plants and tissues

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 25, Issue 6, Page 860-870, October 2023., 2023
The composition of rainforest plant microbiomes differs between wet and dry phases of the monsoon, between plant tissue types, and between host plant species and clades. Abstract The Australian Monsoon Tropics (AMT) contain some of the most biodiverse forests on the continent.

Revision of the Barremian fern Coniopteris laciniata from Las Hoyas and El Montsec (Spain): Highlighting its importance in the evolution of vegetation during the Early Cretaceous

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 72, Issue 3, Page 625-637, June 2023., 2023
Abstract The species Coniopteris laciniata and Sphenopteris wonnacottii are heterophyllous ferns recovered from two Spanish Barremian localities, Las Hoyas and El Montsec respectively. The similarities between these species, observed in a study of a total of 66 hand specimens from both localities, indicate that they are conspecific.

Extrafloral nectar as entrée and elaiosomes as main course for ant visitors to a fireprone, mediterranean‐climate shrub

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 11, November 2022., 2022
Thousands of flowering plants produce both extrafloral nectaries on their leaves and seeds with nutrient‐rich appendages. Their possible interaction was examined in an Australian shrub here and shown that their co‐presence serves to attract ants to the plant throughout the year that then take the seeds from the plant to their nests during the flowering

Ecological significance of intraplant variation: Epigenetic mosaicism in Lavandula latifolia plants predicts extant and transgenerational variability of fecundity‐related traits

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 11, Page 2555-2567, November 2022., 2022
In wild lavender Lavandula latifolia, different branchlets of the same plant have variable epigenotypes. Such within‐plant epigenotypic heterogeneity not only predicts extant phenotypic variation among the branchlets themselves, but also explains phenotypic differences among subprogenies produced by different parts of the parent plant.

Different Metabolic Roles for Alternative Oxidase in Leaves of Palustrine and Terrestrial Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
The alternative oxidase pathway (AOP) is associated with excess energy dissipation in leaves of terrestrial plants. To address whether this association is less important in palustrine plants, we compared the role of AOP in balancing energy and carbon ...

Why study plasticity in multiple traits? New hypotheses for how phenotypically plastic traits interact during development and selection

open access: yesEvolution, Volume 76, Issue 5, Page 858-869, May 2022., 2022
Abstract Organisms can often respond adaptively to a change in their environment through phenotypic plasticity in multiple traits, a phenomenon termed as multivariate plasticity. These different plastic responses could interact and affect each other's development as well as selection on each other, but the causes and consequences of these interactions ...

Impact of heterophylly on the sensitivity of Myriophyllum aquaticum biotests [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Sciences Europe, 2013
Parrot feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) is an amphibious macrophyte with an inducible heterophylly. M. aquaticum plants adapted to the emersed state have leaves with a distinct cuticle and water repellent properties. In contrast M. aquaticum plants adapted to the submerged state have leaves typical for submerged hydrophytes with a strongly reduced ...

Identification and regulatory network analysis of SPL family transcription factors in Populus euphratica Oliv. heteromorphic leaves

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The SQUAMOSA promoter-binding protein-like (SPL) family play a key role in guiding the switch of plant growth from juvenile to adult phases. Populus euphratica Oliv.
