Daily Heterothermy in Mammals: Coping with Unpredictable Environments
2000Zoogeographical patterns of daily heterothermy in mammals show that the Afrotropical and Australasian zones have the highest number of species, genera and orders exhibiting daily torpor. 2006Abstract Periods of heterothermy, or torpor, can save mammals and birds substantial amounts of energy. Temperate-zone insect-eating bats often use torpor to accommodate the thermoregulatory challenges associated with their large surface area to volume ratio and dependence on food that fluctuates within and between seasons.
