Seasonal modulation of mesoscale processes alters nutrient availability and plankton communities in the Red Sea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Hydrographic and atmospheric forcing set fundamental constraints on the biogeochemistry of aquatic ecosystems and manifest in the patterns of nutrient availability and recycling, species composition of communities, trophic dynamics, and ecosystem ...

Nitrogen deposition does not exacerbate phosphorus limitation of rhizosphere microbes in subalpine forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The stoichiometric imbalance caused by nitrogen (N) deposition typically exacerbates phosphorus (P) limitation in plants. However, it remains unclear whether this effect extends to soil microbes, particularly those in the rhizosphere.

Diversity, Abundance, and Some Characteristics of Bacteria Isolated from Earth Material Consumed by Wild Animals at Kudurs in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, Russia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Microbiology, 2020
In this work, geochemical and microbiological studies were performed at kudurs in the southeastern part of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range and in the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve located in Primorsky Krai, Russia.

Characterization of dysgonic, heterotrophic bacteria from drinking water [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1985
Only a small percentage of the heterotrophic bacteria encountered in water distribution systems are identifiable, because of these organisms fail to grow on the conventional media used for biochemical characterization. Organisms that would not subculture from the same standard plate count agar used for initial isolation were successfully subcultured on

Sponges are celebrated heterotrophs but also key primary producers on changing coral reefs

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Trophic interactions and nutrient cycling lay at the heart of ecosystem health and biodiversity. In recent years, our understanding of these drivers has been repeatedly challenged by rapid and unanticipated climatic effects, combined with an increasing awareness that ...

Diffuse flow environments within basalt- and sediment-based hydrothermal vent ecosystems harbor specialized microbial communities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Hydrothermal vents differ both in surface input and subsurface geochemistry. The effects of these differences on their microbial communities are not clear.

What controls forest litter decomposition? A coordinated distributed teabag experiment across ten mountains

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Litter decomposition in mountainous forest ecosystems is an essential process that affects carbon and nutrient cycling. However, the contribution of litter decomposition to terrestrial ecosystems is difficult to estimate accurately because of the limited comparability of different studies and limited data on local microclimatic and non‐climatic factors.

Heterotrophic nitrification–aerobic denitrification by novel isolated bacteria

open access: yesJournal of Industrial Microbiology & Biotechnology, 2010
Three novel strains capable of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification were isolated from the landfill leachate treatment system. Based on their phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the isolates were identified as Agrobacterium sp. LAD9, Achromobacter sp. GAD3 and Comamonas sp. GAD4, respectively.

Evaluation of bacteriological and chemical quality of dialysis water and fluid in Isfahan, central Iran [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Chemical and microbial quality of water used in hemodialysis play key roles in a number of dialysisrelated complications. In order to avoid the complications and to guarantee safety and health of patients therefore, vigorous control of water ...
