Microbial plankton communities in the coastal southeastern Black Sea: biomass, composition and trophic interactions

open access: yesOceanologia, 2018
Summary: We investigated biomass and composition of the pico-, nano- and microplankton communities in a coastal station of the southeastern Black Sea during 2011.

Ferric Iron Reduction by Acidophilic Heterotrophic Bacteria [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1991
Fifty mesophilic and five moderately thermophilic strains of acidophilic heterotrophic bacteria were tested for the ability to reduce ferric iron in liquid and solid media under aerobic conditions; about 40% of the mesophiles (but none of the moderate thermophiles) displayed at least some capacity to reduce iron.

Growth limiting conditions and denitrification govern extent and frequency of volume detachment of biofilms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study aims at evaluating the mechanisms of biofilm detachment with regard of the physical properties of the biofilm. Biofilms were developed in Couette–Taylor reactor under controlled hydrodynamic conditions and under different environmental growth ...

Biomineralization of primary carbonate cements: a new biosignature in the fossil record from the Anisian of Southern Italy

open access: yesLethaia, EarlyView., 2021
Biomineralization is a generic term used to indicate biological‐mediated mineral formation. In carbonate mineralization, nucleation of crystals can be: (1) controlled directly by the organisms, like in the skeletal formation of most metazoans; (2) induced by microbial communities, by indirect precipitation mediated by their metabolic activities; or (3)

Microplastics in the menu of Mediterranean zooplankton: Insights from the feeding response of the calanoid copepod Centropages typicus

open access: yesMarine Ecology, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Microplastic input into the ocean represents an increasing threat to marine biota and may endanger the functioning of marine ecosystems, especially in semi‐enclosed basins, such as the Mediterranean Sea. The size spectrum of microplastics overlaps with that of nano‐microplankton (2–200 μm), thus potentially misleading suspension‐feeding ...

The effect of heterotrophic sewage bacteria of Mashhad on the removal of mercury from fluorescent lamp used in Mashhad [PDF]

open access: yesPizhūhish dar Bihdāsht-i Muḥīṭ., 2020
Background and Aim: Today, fluorescent lamps are the most common light source in the world and Iran. Mercury in these lamps may enter the environment and cause harmful effects.

Response of heterotrophic bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton and heterotrophic nanoflagellates to re-oligotrophication [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plankton Research, 2009
We investigated the response of the microbial components of the pelagic food web to re-oligotrophication of large, deep Lake Constance where total phosphorus concentrations during mixing decreased from a maximum of 2.81 mmol L 1 in 1979 via 1.87 mmol L 1 in 1987 to 0.26 mmol L 1 in 2007. Measurements of heterotrophic bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton (

The planktonic food web in the Gulf of Naples based on the analysis of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios

open access: yesMarine Ecology, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Plankton play a key role in marine food webs by producing and transferring organic matter and energy to higher trophic levels. To define the trophic structure and interactions within the planktonic communities in the Gulf of Naples, we determined carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in particulate organic matter (POM, <20 μm ...

Effect of zooplankton-mediated trophic cascades on marine microbial food web components (bacteria, nanoflagellates, ciliates) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
To examine the grazing effects of copepod-dominated mesozooplankton on heterotrophic microbial communities, four mesocosm experiments using gradients of zooplankton abundance were carried out at a coastal marine site.
