A fractal pattern of hierarchical genetic population structure in mixed stocks across fish segregated by dams revealed by genomic resources for curimba Prochilodus lineatus

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Genomic resources, new microsatellite markers and a novel observation of a fractal pattern in the genetic population structure are presented for curimba, Prochilodus lineatus, a freshwater migratory model species of South America. Our main goals were to investigate the presence of mixed fish stocks and the effects of damming‐induced ...

Effect of polymorphic colour vision for fruit detection in the spider monkey Ateles geoffroyi, and its implications for the maintenance of polymorphic colour vision in platyrrhine monkeys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Most platyrrhine monkeys have an X-linked tri-allelic polymorphism for medium and long wavelength (M/L) sensitive cone photopigments. These pigments' sensitivity maxima (λmax) range from 535 to 562 nm.

Ontogeny of escape response and body shape in threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Escape responses in fishes provide insight into accelerative motions and behavioural response times of these animals, linking numerous fitness‐related traits. We sought to connect escape response performance to genotype and phenotype across ontogenetic stages within a single population of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) to ...

Full‐length coding sequence analysis of the voltage‐gated sodium channel and acetylcholinesterase genes reveals target‐site mutations and acetylcholinesterase gene duplication in housefly (Musca domestica) populations in Japanese livestock barns

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
We simultaneously analysed insecticide resistance mutations in VGSC and AChE using NGS and hybridization probe capture in houseflies collected from livestock facilities for the first time. Resistance mutations in both VGSC and AChE were detected in most wild populations, suggesting widespread distribution of resistance genes.

Genetic diversity in populations of asexual and sexual bag worm moths (Lepidoptera: Psychidae)

open access: yesBMC Ecology, 2005
Background Despite the two-fold cost of sex, most of the higher animals reproduce sexually. The advantage of sex has been suggested to be its ability, through recombination, to generate greater genetic diversity than asexuality, thus enhancing adaptation

Animal Models of GWAS-Identified Type 2 Diabetes Genes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
More than 65 loci, encoding up to 500 different genes, have been implicated by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as conferring an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D).

ClAPRT3‐Mediated Adenine Salvage Pathway Enhances Purine Metabolites to Sustain Seed Vigour During Selfing in Cunninghamia lanceolata

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Selfing often causes inbreeding depression, especially during seed and seedling stages. However, some selfed progeny show low inbreeding depression with enhanced vigour, differing from inbred counterparts. This study investigates the molecular mechanisms maintaining seed vigour during selfing in Cunninghamia lanceolata.

Matings Between Individuals with Similar Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Improve Offspring Survival in the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

open access: yesFishes
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) consists of genes involved in immune response and molecular discrimination between self and non-self. MHC genes are the most polymorphic in vertebrates. The origin and maintenance of polymorphism in MHC genes in

Antagonistic experimental coevolution with a parasite increases host recombination frequency

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2012
Background One of the big remaining challenges in evolutionary biology is to understand the evolution and maintenance of meiotic recombination. As recombination breaks down successful genotypes, it should be selected for only under very limited ...
