Analytical Study on Multi-Tier 5G Heterogeneous Small Cell Networks: Coverage Performance and Energy Efficiency

open access: yesSensors, 2016
In this paper, we investigate the coverage performance and energy efficiency of multi-tier heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) which are composed of macrocells and different types of small cells, i.e., picocells and femtocells.

Deep multi‐agent RL for anti‐jamming and inter‐cell interference mitigation in NOMA networks

open access: yesIET Communications, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
Four multi‐agent reinforcement learning algorithms: Q‐learning based unselfish (QLU), deep QLU, hot booting deep QLU, and decreased state deep QLU. We also provide a game‐theoretic analysis that demonstrates the algorithms' convergence to the optimal network‐wide strategy with high probability.

Content Caching and Channel Allocation in D2D-Assisted Wireless HetNets

open access: yes, 2021
The fifth generation cellular networks are required to provide very fast and reliable communications while dealing with the increase of users traffic. In heterogeneous networks (HetNets) assisted with device-to-device (D2D) communications, traffic can be

A Survey of Client-Controlled HetNets for 5G

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2017
With the rise and widespread deployment of a vast array of wireless radio access technologies (e.g., 3G, 4G/LTE, 802.11, Bluetooth, and Femto) and the growth of interest in potential 5G technologies such as millimeter-wave radio, coupled with the rapid increase in the number of network edge devices with multiple radio interfaces, the question of ...

Predictive handover mechanism for seamless mobility in 5G and beyond networks

open access: yesIET Communications, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
To improve the mobile handover in 5G and future mobile networks, this article puts forth a predictive handover mechanism using reinforcement learning algorithm. The RL algorithm outperforms the ML algorithm in several aspects as the results of this paper have shown.

An Auction Approach to Spectrum Management in HetNets

open access: yesCoRR, 2017
The growing demand in mobile Internet access calls for high capacity and energy efficient cellular access with better cell coverage. The in-band relaying solution, proposed in LTE-Advanced, improves coverage without requiring additional spectrum for backhauling, making its deployment more economical and practical. However, in-band relay without careful

QoE‐based dynamic resource allocation for heterogeneous smart distribution grids

open access: yesIET Communications, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
This article introduces an innovative metric termed as Quality of Experience (QoE) by amalgamating the terminal operations concerning data rate, latency, and packet loss rate. With the aim of maximizing the QoE, we design a dynamic resource allocation scheme in a heterogeneous wireless communication and power line communication network.

Simulation and Analysis of Mobile Access (SAMA): Cellular Radio Access Network Simulator and Performance Evaluator Applied to 5G

open access: yesIET Communications, Volume 19, Issue 1, January/December 2025.
This paper presents SAMA, a simulator for 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN), designed to evaluate the performance of different network configurations. The diagram illustrates the simulator's workflow: from inputs such as base station (BS) and user equipment (UE) arrangements, SAMA simulates resource allocation and scheduling, considering interference.

On the Local Delay and Energy Efficiency of Clustered HetNets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Due to the dense and generally random deployment of base stations (BSS) in heterogeneous networks (HetNets), stochastic geometry has increasingly been used to analyze the performance of HetNets.
