Evaluating Speech-Based Smart Devices Using New Usability Heuristics

IEEE Pervasive Computing, 2018
We developed a set of 17 usability heuristics for speech-based smart devices. An expert evaluation of three popular devices shows that these heuristics can be used to uncover existing usability problems as well as help design new interfaces.

Power transmission system stability using sssc series facts device with heuristic and hybrid heuristic optimization techniques

i-manager’s Journal on Electrical Engineering, 2023
This paper presents a hybrid algorithm using a Hybrid Firefly and Particle Swarm Optimization (HFPSO) algorithm to determine the optimal placement of SSSC devices. A multi-objective function is used to increase voltage stability, voltage profile and minimize overall power losses of the transmission system.

Heuristic Methods for Selection and Ordering of Part-Orienting Devices

SSRN Electronic Journal, 1990
Part-orienting systems are employed in many manufacturing environments to feed work parts in correct orientation for proper operations. A part-orienting system is a serial arrangement of orienting devices; the selection and ordering of these devices is an important design aspect that is addressed in this paper.

LEARNING FAULT DIAGNOSIS HEURISTICS FROM DEVICE DESCRIPTIONS

1990
This chapter describes a technique for the construction of the knowledge base of a diagnostic expert system. Diagnosis heuristics (i.e., efficient rules that encode empirical associations between atypical device behavior and device failures) are learned from information implicit in device models. This approach is desirable since less effort is required

Optimal location of FACTS device using meta heuristic search algorithm

2015 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON), 2015
This paper presents Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) based method for optimal placement of STATCOM (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) in a power network. The methodology is mathematically formulated based on installation cost of STATCOM and power loss in the line.

Usability analysis of shared device ecosystem security: informing support for survivors of IoT-facilitated tech-abuse

New Security Paradigms Workshop, 2019
The use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is an emerging trend for citizens. These devices may have implications for the security of various areas of life; for survivors of technology-facilitated domestic abuse and violence (tech-abuse), a shared ...

Heuristic design procedure for structures with displacement‐dependent damping devices

Engineering Computations, 2009
PurposeThe use of supplemental damping to dissipate energy is one of the most economical and effective ways to mitigate the effects of earthquake on structures. For practicing engineers, the ideal design procedure for buildings with supplemental damping should not be too complex to implement in practice.

Heuristics for scheduling reconfigurable devices with consideration of reconfiguration overheads

2008 IEEE International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing, 2008
When using dynamically and partially reconfigurable FPGAs in embedded systems, the scheduler needs to fulfill area and time requirements for each task. While those demands are already well studied in literature, another characteristic peculiarity of reconfigurable systems has been rather neglected: the reconfiguration overhead.

Integrated Heuristic for Hardware/Software Co-design on Reconfigurable Devices

2012 13th International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing, Applications and Technologies, 2012
Hardware/Software (HW/SW) partitioning and scheduling are essential to the embedded systems. In this paper, a hybrid algorithm derived from Tabu Search and Simulated Annealing is proposed for solving the HW/SW partitioning problem. The virtual hardware resource is set to implement the customized Tabu Search.

An heuristic SPICE2-based approach for 2D IIL device simulation

Integration, 1984
Abstract Device modeling based on the injection model is used in conjunction with the Spice 2 program to generate a two-dimensional description of an IIL gate without geometric constraints. The predicted and experimental results are compared, and a good agreement is obtained. The importance of high injection effects and lateral voltage drops is well
