Entropy Coding in HEVC [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Context-Based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) is a method of entropy coding first introduced in H.264/AVC and now used in the latest High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. While it provides high coding efficiency, the data dependencies in H.264/AVC CABAC make it challenging to parallelize and thus limit its throughput.

Linking Bitstream Information to QoE: A Study on Still Images Using HEVC Intra Coding

open access: yesAdvances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2019
The coding tools used in image and video encoders aim at high perceptual quality for low bitrates. Analyzing the results of the encoders in terms of quantization parameter, image partitioning, prediction modes or residuals may provide important insight ...

Can you tell a face from a HEVC bitstream?

open access: yes, 2017
Image and video analytics are being increasingly used on a massive scale. Not only is the amount of data growing, but the complexity of the data processing pipelines is also increasing, thereby exacerbating the problem.

Intra Prediction-Based Hologram Phase Component Coding Using Modified Phase Unwrapping

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
In this paper, we propose a method for compressing the phase component of a full-complex hologram. The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Pleno is undergoing standardization for compressing full-complex holograms.

Steerable Discrete Cosine Transform [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In image compression, classical block-based separable transforms tend to be inefficient when image blocks contain arbitrarily shaped discontinuities. For this reason, transforms incorporating directional information are an appealing alternative.

Extended Cross-Component Prediction in HEVC [PDF]

open access: yes2015 Picture Coding Symposium (PCS), 2015
The support for chroma formats other than 4∶2∶0 and bit depths higher than 10 bit has been included into the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard by the publication of Version 2. In contrast to 4∶2∶2 profiles without additional dedicated coding tools relative to the Main profile, all 4∶4∶4 profiles specify a novel compression efficiency tool ...
