Stereospecificity in the cytotoxic action of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 2010Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) is a highly recalcitrant organochlorine insecticide known for its chronic toxicity. In spite of many isolated studies a clear mechanism of cytotoxic action of HCH and the structure-toxicity relationship of its isomers is not well understood.

The airborne gas-phase and particle-phase concentrations of α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH), γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were measured near Turkey Lake (in central Ontario) and at Pt. Petre (on the north shore of Lake Ontario) between the spring of 1987 and the spring of 1989 using a gas and particle (GAP) sampler which

Biodegradation of alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane
Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, 1975Alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH) is dechlorinated by enzymes contained in rat liver cytosol and microsomes. An evidence was obtained that in the cytosol there are two alpha-HCH dechlorinating enzymes at least; one operates only in the presence of reduced glutathione (GSH) and catalyzes dechlorinations associated with the formation of another ...

Partition Behavior of Hexachlorocyclohexane Isomers
Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data, 2008Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH, C6Cl6H6) is a persistent chemical that can be found around the globe in various environmental compartments. Much research has been conducted on its environmental fate, but there remains a controversy regarding the basic physicochemical properties of its isomers. We have therefore measured additional partition data for α-, β-,

ELIMINATION OF β-HEXACHLOROCYCLOHEXANE IN OCCUPATIONALLY EXPOSED PERSONS
Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, 1997The elimination of beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCH) in humans was investigated in a group of 40 former workers of a lindane-producing plant by analyzing at least 2 blood specimens (3 specimens in 3 workers) from different time points. Assuming a first-order kinetic model for excretion, the median half-life of beta-HCH is 7.2 yr calculated by ...

Interactions of hexachlorocyclohexanes with lipid bilayers
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1985Abstract Quenching of the fluorescence of a hydrophobic analogue of tryptophan incorporated into lipid bilayers has been used to measure partition coefficients for lindane and the α- and δ-isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane. Partition coefficients between water and lipid are comparable to those between water and octanol and exhibit a negative ...

Remediation of hexachlorocyclohexanes by electrochemically activated persulfates
Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2015Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers represent a family of formerly widely utilized pesticides that are persistent, capable of undergoing long-range transport and tend to bioaccumulate in human and animal tissue. Their widespread global utilization coupled with a propensity to adversely impact human health and the environment translates into an urgent ...

Occurrence of beta-hexachlorocyclohexane in breast cancer patients
Cancer, 1990The residues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and neutral organochlorine compounds in breast fat of 44 breast cancer patients and 33 women free of cancer were determined. No statistically significant differences appeared between the two comparison groups with regard to occurrence of PAH compounds.
