Self-Assembly of Monatomic Complex Crystals and Quasicrystals with a Double-Well Interaction Potential

open access: yes, 2007
For the study of crystal formation and dynamics we introduce a simple two-dimensional monatomic model system with a parametrized interaction potential.

Lozenge tilings of hexagons with arbitrary dents

open access: yesAdvances in Applied Mathematics, 2016
Eisenk"olbl gave a formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon on the triangular lattice with three unit triangles removed from along alternating sides. In earlier work, the first author extended this to the situation when an arbitrary set of unit triangles is removed from along alternating sides of the hexagon.

Ions as Architects of DNA Nanostructures: Mechanisms, Simulations, and Technological Frontiers

open access: yesSmall Structures, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2026.
Ions are not merely passive electrolytes but active regulators of DNA nanostructures. This review shows how ion valence, hydration, and specificity govern electrostatic screening, correlation, and confinement, enabling DNA origami, metallized DNA, nanopores, hydrogels, DNAzymes, molecular machines, and energy devices through integrated experimental and

Tiling with almost-BPS states

open access: yes, 1999
In the light of recent studies of BPS triple junctions in the Wess-Zumino model we describe techniques to construct infinite lattices using similar junctions.

Primitive icosahedral quasicrystals in ZnMgLi(Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) systems

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section A, Volume 82, Issue 2, Page 108-117, March 2026.
The study introduces new primitive icosahedral quasicrystals in Zn–Mg–Li–(Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) systems. Quasicrystals are studied with an X‐ray diffraction technique resolving the local atomic structure.New quasicrystals with rare‐earth elements and Li are synthesized with the self‐flux method. The starting composition involves 62.8 at.% Zn, 28.6 at.% Mg, 3.

Proliferation of anomalous symmetries in colloidal monolayers subjected to quasiperiodic light fields

open access: yes, 2010
Quasicrystals provide a fascinating class of materials with intriguing properties. Despite a strong potential for numerous technical applications, the conditions under which quasicrystals form are still poorly understood.

Distribution and Feeding of Hexatilemonas jangsaensis, a Novel Cosmopolitan Member of the Uncultured Marine Apusomonad Clade

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 3, March 2026.
This study describes a novel species of marine heterotrophic nanoflagellate, Hexatilemonas jangsaensis gen. et sp. n., within the uncultured APU‐30 clade, and highlights the global distribution pattern of this previously uncharacterised genus. This isolate is hypothesised to feed on bacteria attached to substrates in the water column using pseudopodia.

Pattern formation in the dipolar Ising model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice

open access: yes, 2012
We present Monte Carlo simulation results for a two-dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings and a competing long-range dipolar interaction on a honeycomb lattice. Both structural and thermodynamic properties are very similar
