The predatory behavior of ants: an impressive panoply of morphological adaptations

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This review focuses on predation in ants, showing the wide diversity of cases from solitary foraging to group hunting tactics, as well as the evolution of mandible shape frequently adapted to capture specific prey. Although most ants are generalist feeders, finding their sugary substances directly on plants or indirectly via sap‐sucking insects, some ...

Insecta. La búsqueda de la clasificación perfecta Insecta. Searching for the perfect classification

Russian wheat aphid: a model for genomic plasticity and a challenge to breeders

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Invasive foundress finds suitable habitat and reproduces through pathogenesis. Wingless females produce life offspring quickly, which leads to high population densities. High population densities result in competition, which may induce epigenetic changes and wing development for dispersal.

Full‐length transcriptome profiling of true bug mitochondrial genomes reveals the unique transcriptional regulation during insect evolution

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
The mitogenome was transcribed into complete primary polycistrons on both strands. The heteropteran mitochondrial transcription termination factor (HmTTF) functions as a bidirectional attenuator rather than a terminator, and co‐evolution of HmTTF and the binding sites was observed.

Peptidomics-Based Phylogeny and Biogeography of Mantophasmatodea (Hexapoda) [PDF]

open access: yesSystematic Biology, 2012
The insect order Mantophasmatodea was described in 2002. Prior to that time, several generations of entomologists had assumed that all major insect taxa were known; thus, its description was a sensation for zoologists. Since then, a surprising abundance and species diversity of this taxon have been found, particularly in the winter rainfall region of ...

Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

An introduction to Iranian Collembola (Hexapoda): an update to the species list

open access: yesZooKeys, 2013
The Collembola fauna of Iran is little known and no comprehensive examination of this group of Hexapoda is available for this region. The only notable work on Collembola was carried out by Cox (1982).
