Ionospheric Clutter Suppression in HF Surface Wave Radar OSMAR

2006 7th International Symposium on Antennas, Propagation & EM Theory, 2006
Experimental trials conducted from 2003 to 2005 in cast China sea demonstrated that HF surface wave radar (HFSWR) OSMAR (Ocean State Monitor and Analysis Radar) could be strongly affected by scattering from ionospheric structures and irregularities.

Ship detection and tracking using HF surface wave radar

RADAR 2002, 2003
The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) conducted a joint trial involving multiple sensors in the detection and tracking of ships in the Grand Banks of Canada in March 2000, including the HF surface wave radar (HFSWR) system at Cape Race, Newfoundland.

HF Surface Wave Radar Tests at the Eastern China Sea

Wave Propagation, Scattering and Emission in Complex Media, 2005
The HF surface wave radar system OSMAR2000 adopts Frequency Modulated Interrupted Continuous Waveform (FMICW) and its 120m-antenna array is transmitting receiving co-used. MUSIC and MVM are applied to obtain sea echo's direction of arrival (DOA) when extracting currents information.

Estimation of target altitude in HF surface wave radar

7th International Conference on High Frequency Radio Systems and Techniques, 1997
HF surface wave radars (HFSWR) are the only long range ground based radar systems that can detect targets down to sea level, at ranges of tens to several hundreds of kilometers. This unique detection capability is a result of the low attenuation over salt water of vertically polarised HF radio waves, and makes the HFSWR ideally suited to the detection ...

HF surface wave radar for oceanography - a review of activities in Germany

2003 Proceedings of the International Conference on Radar (IEEE Cat. No.03EX695), 2004
The remote sensing group of the University of Hamburg is working in the field of HF radar since 1980. For the start three CODAR systems have been purchased from NOAA/ERL (developed by D. Barrick's NOAA group). Based on 16 years of experience a new system called WEllen RAdar (WERA) has been designed at the University of Hamburg in 1996.

Directional wave spectrum measurement with multistatic HF surface wave radar

IGARSS 2000. IEEE 2000 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Taking the Pulse of the Planet: The Role of Remote Sensing in Managing the Environment. Proceedings (Cat. No.00CH37120), 2002
HF surface wave radars (HFSWR) measure sea surface currents and current profiles via the Doppler shift of the discrete (first-order scattering) line structure in the radar Doppler spectrum. They can also exploit the higher-order scattering contributions to the Doppler spectrum which yield information on the sea surface directional spectrum in the ...

A Study on Evaluation Detection Performance of HF Surface Wave Radar

2018 12th International Symposium on Antennas, Propagation and EM Theory (ISAPE), 2018
Different from the conventional microwave radar, HF radar working environment is terrible. There are many factors effect on the detection performance, and most of them associated with the radar operating frequency, so it's very important to select a proper operating frequency for HF radar. Based on the radar equation, detailed analysis of factors which

Performance evaluation of correlation detector for HF Surface Wave Radar

2012 Asia Pacific Microwave Conference Proceedings, 2012
HF Surface Wave Radar (SWR) can provide cost effective coastal surveillance. Recently invented correlation detector observes the correlation of received power along the azimuth axis across neighboring Range Doppler (RD) cells to detect the presence of a target in a given RD cell.

Improved range resolution for FMCW HF surface wave radar

2010 IEEE International Conference on Wireless Information Technology and Systems, 2010
A modified signal processing for FMCW waveform has been proposed that yields an improved range resolution without increasing the transmitted signal bandwidth. The chirp duration is reduced by an appropriate factor while the interval of the beat signal sequence considered for the range transform is kept constant.

Remote sensing of surface currents and waves by the HF radar WERA

Seventh International Conference on Electronic Engineering in Oceanography - Technology Transfer from Research to Industry, 1997
HF radar is based on the process of backscattering of electromagnetic waves of 10 m to 50 m wavelength from the rough sea surface and can be used to measure surface currents and ocean wave parameters. In contrast to microwave radars, the transmitted electromagnetic wave is guided by the sea surface following the curvature of the Earth beyond the ...
