Reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(0) by Magnetite

Environmental Science & Technology, 2009
Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element, and its contamination of groundwater presents a significant threat to terrestrial ecosystems. Understanding the geochemical processes that mediate mercury transformations in the subsurface is necessary to predict its fate and transport. In this study, we investigated the redox transformation of mercuric Hg (Hg[II]

Thermodynamic assessment of binary Zn-Hg, Cd-Hg, AND In-Hg amalgams

Calphad, 1998
Abstract A thermodynamic assessment of the binary Zn-Hg, Cd-Hg and In-Hg systems has been completed. A set of parameters describing the Gibbs energy of each phase is given. Comparison between calculated quantities and experimental data is generally good.

Hg–Hg bonding and its influence on the stability of (HgS)n clusters

Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics
Pulsed laser ablation of HgS(s) shows the formation of (HgS)n=2–4+, HgSn=1–8±, and HgmSn± cluster ions. Theoretical analysis evidences that Hg–Hg interaction plays a vital role in the stability of (HgS)n and validates experimental observation.
