Biofilm formation and role of other pathogenic factors in the virulence of Staphylococcus epidermidis clinical isolates [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
Medical device-associated infections represent a significant healthcare challenge, as sterilization of the biomaterial often necessitates device removal. The most frequently isolated microorganism in these infections is Staphylococcus epidermidis, a skin

A Theoretical-Experimental Study on the Structure and Activity of Certain Quinolones and the Interaction of Their Cu(II)-Complexes on a DNA Model. [PDF]

open access: yesMet Based Drugs, 2000
Theoretical electronic Structure methods have been employed to study the structure and activity of certain (free) quinolones and the interaction of their Cu(II)‐complexes on a DNA model (Rhodamine 6G (rhod)). As a manner of assessing the generated geometries, the nalidixic acid geometrical parameters obtained were tested against the crystallographic ...

Effects of Hidrophobic Surfactant Proteins SP-B and SP-C on the Mechanical Properties and Structural Stability of Phospholipid Bilayers [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2012
The respiratory surface is stabilized by pulmonary surfactant, a complex mixture of lipids and proteins, whose main function is reducing surface tension at the alveolar air-liquid interface in order to facilitate the work of breathing. It is composed by around 90% lipids and 8-10% specific proteins, including the hydrophobic polypeptides SP-B and SP-C.

The Surface Character of Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated From Subclinical Mastitis of Dairy Cow Supporting Adherence to Udder Epithelial Cell [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one among pathogen bacteria that caused mastitis in dairycow in Indonesia. Its ability to initiate infection depends on the surface character of the bacteria. Thesurface character of S.

HPMA and HEMA copolymer bead interactions with eukaryotic cells

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2004
Two different hydrophilic acrylate beads were prepared via aqueous suspension polymerization. Beads produced of a hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and ethyleneglycol methacrylate (EDMA) copolymer were obtained using a polyvinyl alcohol suspending medium.

Immobilization of a Plant Lipase from Pachira aquatica in Alginate and Alginate/PVA Beads

open access: yesEnzyme Research, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
This study reports the immobilization of a new lipase isolated from oleaginous seeds of Pachira aquatica, using beads of calcium alginate (Alg) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). We evaluated the morphology, number of cycles of reuse, optimum temperature, and temperature stability of both immobilization methods compared to the free enzyme.
