Solvent-tuned hierarchical porosity in nitrocellulose aerogels
Chemical Communications, 2012We describe the simple preparation of nitrocellulose gels and high surface area (300 + m(2) g(-1)) aerogels and their hierarchical pore structures. The solvent in which the gels form greatly influences the pore geometry and size distribution of the gels in both the macro- and mesopore domains.

Carbon Monoliths Possessing a Hierarchical, Fully Interconnected Porosity
Advanced Materials, 2003Monolithic carbon possessing hierarchical, multimodal porosity has been prepared by nano‐casting of monolithic, meso‐ and macroporous silica. The carbon monolith (right in Figure) is a positive replica of the silica monolith on the micrometer scale, but a negative replica on the nanometer scale.

Alkali-bonded ceramics with hierarchical tailored porosity
Applied Clay Science, 2013Alkali-bonded ceramics and foams with tailored porosity have very interesting applications as thermal insulators, catalysts, filters, etc. Alkali-bonded ceramics were prepared starting from metakaolin and potassium silicate, selecting the process conditions, to change the intrinsic nano-micro-porosity of the geopolymer, and studying their influence on ...

Fabrication of ceramic components with hierarchical porosity
Journal of Materials Science, 2010This article reviews different methodologies for the fabrication of monolithic ceramic components possessing multiscale porosity, i.e., with pores ranging from a few nanometers to several hundred microns. Two main strategies have been discussed: (a) the assembling of micro/mesoporous materials into components possessing also macropores; (b) the ...

Sol–gel synthesis of monolithic materials with hierarchical porosity
Chemical Society Reviews, 2016The development of synthetic routes to porous materials containing multiple, discrete sets of pores having disparate length scales is of high interest for a wide range of applications.

Hierarchical Porosity Components by Infiltration of a Ceramic Foam
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2007A ceramic body with hierarchical meso–macro‐porosity was prepared by depositing a mesoporous silica coating on the walls of a macroporous silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) foam. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering revealed that a uniform mesoporous coating was deposited on the ...

Silica monoliths with hierarchical porosity obtained from porous glasses
Chem. Soc. Rev., 2013This review deals with "classical" porous glasses which are prepared by physical phase separation of alkali borosilicate glasses of suitable composition in combination with selective leaching. The resulting materials are characterized by a controllable pore size in the nanometer range, high mechanical, thermal and chemical stability and an adjustable ...

Chemical phase separation strategies towards silica monoliths with hierarchical porosity
Chemical Society Reviews, 2013In this tutorial review the preparation of monolithic silica materials with hierarchical porosity by the competing processes of sol-gel transition and chemical phase separation is summarized. Four principally different routes will be discussed in detail, including multiple micellar as well as high internal phase emulsion templating routes.

Ice-templated porous silicate cement with hierarchical porosity
Materials Letters, 2018Abstract Hierarchical porous silicate cements with lamellar/dendritic morphology were prepared by combination of ice-templating and hydration reaction routes. The macropores with multimodal pore distributions are found to be interconnected through intrinsic mesopores resulting from ice crystals growth and hydration products generation.
