Time‐Domain Raman Spectroscopy: An Emerging Technique in Space Exploration?

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
The potential of time‐domain Raman spectroscopy in space exploration is discussed. This work is motivated by the emergence of robust, space‐qualified femtosecond lasers and by the fact that time‐domain detection allows the design of very compact instruments, while avoiding problems such as fluorescence or ambient light backgrounds (inset: ESA/DLR/FU ...

Black Plastic Identification for Sorting and Recycling With Deep‐UV Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
We present a deep ultraviolet (DUV) Raman spectrometer for sorting black plastics in recycling. The common identification modality of hyperspectral NIR struggles with black plastics due to strong absorption by the black pigment. By using a 248.6‐nm NeCu laser, we enable stand‐off detection over a conveyor belt while avoiding fluorescence interference ...

Female and male grizzly bears differ in their responses to low‐intensity recreation in a protected area

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Human access and time of day affect the behavior (movement rate, selection) of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) near recreation sites in a protected area. Males used trails to travel during crepuscular and nocturnal hours, especially in restricted areas, whereas females showed more cautious responses, suggesting security trade‐offs.

Temperature‐Dependent Spectroscopy and Laser Performance of Yellow Tb:YLF Lasers with 36% Slope Efficiency at Room Temperature and 61% at 100 K

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Highly efficient cryogenic yellow laser performance of Tb:YLF (Tb3+:LiYF4) is reported. The room temperature slope efficiency of 36% increases to 61% at 100 K, while the wavelength changes from 587 to 581 nm. Moreover, red laser emission at 624 nm with 47% slope efficiency at 78 K is demonstrated.

Tailored Frequency Conversion in Nonlinear Subwavelength Grating Metaslabs

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Subwavelength gratings are introduced as a tool for flexible, accurate control of phase matching (PM) in integrated optical frequency converters. Implemented in partially etched GaAs metaslab waveguides, tuning of the second‐harmonic PM wavelength by up to 100 nm is achieved, with wider ranges predicted by simulations.
