Increasing the birefringence splitting in single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) enables high-speed polarisation dynamics which can be the basis to overcome the current bandwidth limitations in short-haul data transmission.

Novel high birefringence dibenzothiophenylacetylene liquid crystals
Liquid Crystals, 2002We have designed, synthesized and evaluated dibenzothiophenylacetylene homologues as new heterocyclic molecules which were expected to have high δα values and short wavelength UV absorption spectra. The dibenzothiophenyl acetylene homologues exhibited wide nematic phase ranges and had very high extrapolated δn of over 0.6 and directly measured values ...

UV Stable High Birefringence Liquid Crystals
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2004High birefringence and low viscosity nematic liquid crystal single compounds and mixtures were developed and their properties evaluated. The UV stability of the single isothiocyanianes liquid crystal compounds was studied by different methods. Excellent UV durability of some of the single high birefringence isothiocyanianes was discovered.

High Birefringence Optical Fibre Pressure Sensor
SPIE Proceedings, 1988A remote passive pressure sensor has been demonstrated using a high birefringence optical fibre. The principle is based upon a single fibre polarimetric interferometer and the technique for aligning the birefringence axes of the fibre. The design incorporates a temperature compensation and allows the use of low coherence sources.

High Birefringence Isothiocyanato Tolane Liquid Crystals
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2003The phase transition temperatures, birefringence and visco-elastic coefficient of several high birefringence isothiocyanato tolane compounds were evaluated. The polarizability of these compounds was calculated by the Austin Model 1 (AM1) and Modified Neglect of Diatomic Overlap (MNDO) methods.

High birefringence terahertz photonic crystal fiber
Optical Engineering, 2013A new high birefringence terahertz photonic crystal fiber is pro- posed. The properties of birefringence, confinement loss, and chromatic dispersion are studied by using full-vector finite-element methods with an anisotropic perfectly matched layers absorption boundary condition. The cladding contains several periodically arranged diamond-shaped units,

Considering the utilizing of geometrical birefringence, we propose a new type of stress-induced polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) with a ‘leaf-shaped’ core —a structure found by combining the merits of elliptical and rhombic core shapes.

The dynamic birefringence of high polymers
Journal of Polymer Science Part B: Polymer Physics, 1962AbstractThe simultaneous measurement of the birefringence and strain of a sample subjected to sinusoidal strain is proposed as a means for elucidating the molecular mechanism of the response of high polymers to mechanical deformation. A linear phenomenological theory is proposed in which strain‐optical coefficient distribution functions are assigned to
