Although the FEL interaction is predominantly longitudinal in nature, transverse physics cannot be neglected if one wants to have a complete picture of the FEL. Specifically, we must understand the roles of radiation diffraction and how the electron’s betatron motion in the undulator affects performance.

High-Gain Adaptive Stabilization
2017This chapter presents the basic idea of classical high-gain adaptive stabilization (or high-gain adaptive control) of linear time-invariant (LTI) single-input single-output (SISO) systems. LTI SISO systems of form (5.88) with direct feedthrough (i.e. \(d\ne 0\)) are of marginal relevance for plant modeling in mechatronics.

High gain control system design with gain plots
1991Abstract: "This paper quantifies and summarizes in a general theorem the asymptotic high gain behavior of closed-loop eigenvalues. The theorem is founded on fundamental principles of classical control theory, and its implications are demonstrated conclusively via specialized plots, the Gain Plots (Kurfess and Nagurka, 1991), that offer a new and ...

Raman-gain estimates for high-gain optical fibers
Journal of Applied Physics, 1987The amplification of light signals by the mechanism of stimulated Raman scattering is discussed, with specific reference to certain heavy-metal germanate and arsenate glasses with Raman-gain-coefficients G of up to 20 times that of fused silica. Calculations are presented of the intrinsic scattering losses from Rayleigh, Brillouin, and spontaneous ...
