An 8-year-old boy presented with acute visual loss in the right eye and nausea, vomiting, and diplopia. Imaging revealed a right orbital apex mass. Biopsy showed Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), and the patient was diagnosed with isolated orbital LCH causing an orbital apex syndrome. A 12-month cytarabine chemotherapy course was begun, during which

The ability of pressure to change inter-atomic distances strongly leads to a wide range of pressure-induced phenomena at high pressures: for example metallisation, amorphisation, superconductivity and polymerisation. Key to understanding these phenomena is the determination of the crystal structure using x-ray or neutron diffraction.

A 45-year-old male presented with a slowly progressive, painless swelling in his right eye for the past 6 months. He had undergone an open globe injury repair 10 years back and an eventful cataract surgery 5 years back. The presenting visual acuity in the affected eye was perception of light with inaccurate projection of rays.

X-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out on germanium in a diamond anvil cell to 26 GPa. The pressure at the transition to the metallic phase (II) has been studied in different pressurizing media, giving 10.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 GPa in a quasihydrostatic medium (4:1 methanol:ethanol mixture), 9.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.1 ...

A high-pressure resonant cavity for sensitive EPR measurements is described. The cavity operating in the TE115 cylindrical mode enables EPR experiments to be carried out in the 77–300 K temperature range at high hydrostatic pressure up to 8 kilobar.

An apparatus is described which permits the determination of the mechanical permeability and the reflection coefficient of synthetic membranes at different hydrostatic mean pressures in the pressure range 1 up to 100 atm. Thus, it is possible to measure the volume flux across a membrane at pressures up to 100 atm using small pressure differences, ΔP ...

Nanomaterials under high-pressure
Chemical Society Reviews, 2006The use of high-pressure for the study and elaboration of homogeneous nanostructures is critically reviewed. Size effects, the interaction between nanostructures and guest species or the interaction of the nanosystem with the pressure transmitting medium are emphasized.
